TUPELO - Saturday's Second Chance Prom drew more than 300 people to the BancorpSouth Arena, said Matthew Sheffield, communications director for Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition.

The prom, organized by the coalition, was intended to give lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth a prom in which they felt safe to be themselves.

"It was very successful," Sheffield said. "We had a great turnout."

Itawamba AHS senior Constance McMillen and Wesson Attendance Center senior Ceara Sturgis both attended. McMillen had sued her school to be able to attend prom with a female date and to wear a tuxedo.

Sturgis was left out of her high school yearbook after she wore a tuxedo for her picture.
