BOONEVILLE – An Alabama woman has been charged in the shooting death of her mother, Mary “Jane” Hicks Jones of Prentiss County.

Rebecca Lynn Jones, 46, was being held Wednesday in Prentiss County Jail on a charge of murder, said Sheriff Randy Tolar. She lives at 1551 County Road 450, Lexington, Ala., and her bond has been set at $1 million.

Jane Jones, a 66-year-old mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Tuesday of two gunshot wounds at her home on Highway 4 East.

She was remembered by her cousin, Jimmie Ann Lambert, as a loving and talented person.

“We were cousins but we were raised like sisters,” Lambert said. “Her great-granddaughter Jazmine was the light of her life.”

Retired from her job at New Site High School as an assistant teacher, Jane Jones enjoyed horseback riding, dancing and using the computer.

“She had friends all over the United States that she e-mailed every day,” Lambert said. “She was at her computer when she was killed.”

Jane Jones was able to call 911 for help about 5:45 p.m., the sheriff said. When the first officer responding to the call arrived at her residence less than 10 minutes later, Rebecca Jones was returning to the house as well.

Authorities have recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, the sheriff said.

The case remains under investigation by the Prentiss County Sheriff’s Office, and no more details on the incident were provided.

“This is so hard,” Lambert said. “She was a very hard worker and always wanted her home and yard to be just so.”
