Story from this morning's NEMS Daily Journal newspaper. Officials await autopsy report in Saltillo shooting
SALTILLO - Six weeks after the shooting death of 20-year-old Anna Catherine McCoy, investigators still don't have the evidence to declare it a homicide or an accident.
Saltillo Police Chief Steve Brooks said the medical examiner's office in Jackson informed him after the April 15 shooting that the full report would be ready in six to eight weeks. Today will mark six weeks since McCoy's death.
A preliminary report sent to Lee County Coroner Carolyn Gillentine-Green in April declared McCoy's death a homicide, but Saltillo investigator Mark Haygood said the full report was needed before authorities could make a final decision.
"We want to get to the bottom of what happened in the shooting, but we want to make sure we do things the right way," said Brooks. "This is a very serious incident and we are treating it that way. We just don't want to make any conclusions until we can look at all the evidence. I am hoping that the results of the full autopsy report are back soon."
McCoy, who played soccer at Itawamba Community College, was found lying across a bed shot to death at a home on 134 Willoughby Oak Drive. Haygood said a 23-year-old man, possibly McCoy's boyfriend, was in the bedroom with her at the time of the shooting.
Another person was also in the house at the time of the shooting. No one has been arrested or charged in the incident.
If McCoy's death does turnout to be a homicide, it will be Saltillo's first since 2001.
