The free concert is meant to highlight the museum’s current traveling exhibit, “Rhythm & Roots: A Southern Music Tradition.”
“The exhibit has an audio guide, where people can listen to different genres of music and hear stories about how those traditions were started in the South,” said Rae Mathis, the museum’s operations outreach coordinator.
The exhibit from the National Endowment for the Arts and South Arts showcases the history of bluegrass, country, blues, jazz, Cajun and gospel.
“We’ve pulled instruments from our collection to go with the exhibit,” Mathis said.
During the Front Porch Mini-Music Festival, admission to the museum and its ground will be free.
The concert will be 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday on the porch of the museum’s dogtrot house.
“David Gordon has a one-man band,” Mathis said. “He has a sweet voice, like Roy Orbison’s.”
Other performers will include the Partlow Drummers and the Tombigbee Dulcimer Guild.
“It’s all free, but we’ll accept donations,” Mathis said. “People just need to bring their lawn chairs and blankets and listen to the music.”
