NEW ALBANY – A 24-year-old Myrtle man was killed Wednesday morning while on the job with the Mississippi-Tennessee Railroad.

Jeffrey Dale Thompson of 1077 County Road 52 died of head trauma on the scene near the railroad’s Cleveland Street crossing.

“They were using a backhoe to load a generator,” said New Albany Police Chief David Grisham. “Apparently something went wrong, and the generator slipped and pinned him between it and the railroad car.”

No one else was injured in the accident, Grisham said.

Coroner Mark Golding pronounced Thompson dead at 9:20 a.m. Thompson’s body was sent to Jackson for autopsy.

“With it being a railroad accident and the likelihood that OSHA (U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration) will be involved, I thought it was best to have an autopsy done,” Golding said. Preliminary results are expected later this week.
