The board passed the ordinance that states, in part, dogs who are not restrained to the owner’s property may be picked up by an authorized dog catcher. The animals will be housed in the Pontotoc animal shelter with Houlka providing feed. If the animals are not claimed in five working days, they will be delivered to the animal shelter in Tupelo for adoption or euthanasia.
Owners who retrieve their dogs from the Pontotoc shelter will be charged a fine of $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second offense and $100 for the third offense. Owners will not have an opportunity to claim their dogs after the third offense.
Bradley Gregory will serve as the authorized dog catcher and is contracted by the town for one year.
The ordinance also addresses issues of animal cruelty, breeding for resale, vaccination requirements and impoundments of fowl and livestock. The ordinance is on file at City Hall in Houlka and is a public record.
