If you don’t mind your comedy with a heaping helping of raunch, then, hey, this is the movie to see.
If your standards don’t leave room for jokes about every conceivable bodily function, then you’ll want to take a pass.
My standards – heck, who am I kidding? I don’t have standards because I had fun at “Get Him to the Greek.”
Jonah Hill plays Aaron, a low-level music industry executive. When his boss, Sergio (Sean “P. Diddy” Combs), asks for ideas to build the company’s revenue stream, Aaron suggests a comeback concert by Aldous Snow (Russell Brand).
It’s Aaron’s job to fetch Aldous from England and get him to the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in time for the show.
The trouble is, Aldous is a rock star with accompanying ego and drug habit. “Get Him to the Greek” shows us a funny but twisted world of rock ’n’ roll excess, and it’s easy to believe people really live this way.
It’s difficult for Aaron to focus on the job at hand when he’s accepted into Aldous’ party lifestyle, and things happen that won’t go over well with Aaron’s girlfriend, Daphne (Elisabeth Moss).
“Get Him to the Greek” is a road movie, but it’s also a relationship movie. There’s the connection between Aaron and Daphne, as well as the strange bond between Aldous and Jackie Q. (Rose Byrne), a singer who’s enjoyed massive success in the years since she left Aldous.
But the primary relationship is the one between Aaron and Aldous. Among all the crude, R-rated jokes, there’s an underlying story of how two different people find they need each other. Oddly enough, the film has its sweet moments.
I give “Get Him to the Greek” a B. If your significant other agrees to go with you, do something nice for her afterward.
It’s showing at Malcos in Tupelo, Oxford, Corinth and Columbus, as well as Hollywood Premier Cinemas in Starkville.
Look for movie reviews in Scene on Thursdays, and listen each Tuesday morning on Wizard 106.7 between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m.
Kelli Karlson with Wizard 106.7 gives "Get Him to the Greek" a D minus. "If you liked "The Hangover" you'll like this. It was thoroughly disgusting."
