TUPELO – A historically black church with roots in social justice is bringing together Aberdeen residents to help strengthen the community.

The Zion Community Initiative, a 501(c)3 started by Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ, is hosting a panel discussion and serving free refreshments Saturday at the High Street Community Center.

The event, which kicks off at 1 p.m. with a gospel concert, will feature a seven-member panel from the fields of education, business and city government, among others.

The Rev. David Lewis, pastor of Mt. Zion Church, said the moderated discussion will allow people the chance to hear qualified representatives address topics ranging from youth to philanthropic enterprise to the city’s economic development.

The Memphis-based Church of God in Christ, with more than 5 million members worldwide, was founded in the late 19th century by Charles Harrison Mason. The church always has been concerned with social justice issues and Lewis sees Saturday’s event as an expression of that concern.

He also hopes the event will shed some positive light on the city of Aberdeen, which has recently endured the embarrassment of a scandal surrounding the mismanagement of the electric department.

“The concern of the church isn’t just within the four walls,” said Lewis, adding that the event is family-friendly and all are encouraged to attend.
