BOONEVILLE — Booneville aldermen have voted to hold a public meeting on a proposal to switch from an appointed to elected chief of police.

The Daily Corinthian reports the board of aldermen voted 3-2 this past week to hold the meeting.

The chief of police is currently appointed by the board of aldermen.

Mayor Joe Eaton says he opposes the idea. Eaton says he plans to veto the board's decision on a public meeting.

An override of the veto by the board would require the votes of four aldermen at their next meeting.
