OXFORD — New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and his wife, Abby, have given $1 million to an academic scholarship program at their alma mater.

A news release Saturday quotes Manning as saying he's giving to the need-based Ole Miss Opportunity program because academics and good grades were very important to him when he was at Mississippi.

The program, started earlier this year after a 6.5 percent tuition increase was approved, will be used once all of a student's other scholarships and grants are considered. It will cover the gap between those and the average cost of tuition, housing and a meal allowance.

The Mannings have a home in Oxford and said they enjoy their continued involvement with the university, the community and local friends.
