LOS ANGELES — Actor-director Mel Gibson was uninjured after crashing his Maserati sports car into a hillside on Malibu Canyon Road, officials said Monday.

Gibson, 54, lost control of his 2008 car about 8:35 p.m. PDT Sunday as he headed south and plowed into the hillside. California Highway Patrol officers determined he was not driving under the influence, officials said.

"He doesn't know how his car drifted," CHP Officer Miguel Luevano said.

Gibson struck the right side of the hill just south of a tunnel on a particularly curvy stretch of the canyon road. Gibson's Maserati was towed from the crash scene while a friend picked him up.

During a 2006 arrest for allegedly driving under the influence, Gibson launched a verbal tirade against the officer that included anti-Semitic remarks.

Sunday's crash comes as the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is nearing the completion of a domestic violence investigation into Gibson that stems from a bitter custody dispute with his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he has a child.

Grigorieva is under investigation for alleged extortion in connection with taped conversations, e-mails and text messages leaked to the media from the case.
