After an in-depth presentation at Tuesday's city board meeting by Milton Sandy Jr., commissioner for the Elam Creek Drainage District, the mayor and aldermen put $100,000 into the fiscal year 2011 budget to pay for work in the drainage ditches.
The 2010-2011 budget is due to be adopted Wednesday.
City attorney William "Bill" Odom said that until the chancery court affirms the legal status of the drainage districts, the city is responsibile for cleaning out the ditches for erosion control.
The city has asked several businesses to submit estimates on the cost of cutting and mulching work along the drainage canals. Preliminary figures indicate that the amount allocated could take care of several miles of work, said Mayor Jerry Latch.
Sandy and other commissioners appointed by the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors have been gathering information for several weeks on possible solutions to flooding that caused loss of life and costly damage after May 1-2 storms.
