Unofficial results in a tally of more than 500 absentee ballots late Tuesday night showed incumbent at large Alderman Mike Hopkins with a lead of 1,503 votes, followed by Barry Richards with 880 votes and Jennifer Saffore McCoy with 743 votes. Hopkins and Richards will be in the runoff.
Ward 4 Alderman Steve Hill will meet J.C. “Honeyboy” Hill in the runoff, as well. Steve Hill garnered 319 votes to J.C. “Honeyboy” Hill’s 271 votes. Milus Copeland received 68 votes.
Two incumbents were unseated in Tuesday’s voting, with new Democratic candidates facing Republican candidates in the Oct. 12 general election.
Ward 2 incumbent and two-term Alderman William “Bill” Plaxico, with 395 votes, was topped by challenger Preston Biggers Knight, who received 520 votes.
In Ward 5, one-term incumbent Alderman David Roberts received 249 votes to challenger Michael McFall’s 271 votes.
Knight’s opponent in the general election is Ben Albarracin and McFall’s opponent is Brandon Whitley.
A runoff of Republican candidates for Ward 1 alderman also will be required to choose the opponent to Democrat Kendall Steen in the general election.
Andrew “Bubba” Labas, with 48 votes, and Mike Green, 33 votes, will be in the runoff. Candidate Charlotte E. Doehner received 20 votes.
All three candidates in the Ward 3 election – incumbent Republican A.L. “Chip” Wood III, Democrat Samuel Perry Clark and Independent Sharon Woodruff will be on the general election ballot.
The Democratic Executive Committee meets this morning to count affidavit ballots, then is expected to certify election results.
