PONTOTOC - Pontotoc authorities were looking Tuesday for a "person of interest" in the shooting death of a 25-year-old Lee County man.

Pontotoc City Police Chief Larry Poole said he believes the Monday night shooting of Shaun Duane Walton was not a random act.

"I believe the shooter and the victim knew each other," Poole said.

Walton was shot at 8 p.m. while at the Grove Apartments off West Reynolds Extended in Pontotoc.

Poole said Walton was shot with possibly a small-caliber handgun in the chest.

"We have one person of interest that we are looking for in connection with the shooting death," he said.

Poole said Walton, who lived at 120 County Road 51 in Lee County, was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

Pontotoc County coroner Kim Bedford said she pronounced Walton dead of a gunshot wound at the Pontotoc emergency room. His body was taken to Jackson for an autopsy.

Poole said the police, sheriff's office and Mississippi Highway patrol are investigating the case.

If anyone has any tips that will lead to an arrest, Poole asked them to call the Pontotoc Police Department at (662) 489-7804 during the day or 489-3631 at night.
