The shooting victim has been identified as Bradley Cain, an employee of the Booneville Gas and Water Department. Cain suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, wrist and thigh, said Capt. Michael Ramey, who is in charge of the investigation.
The suspect in the shooting - Luis Alberto Naranjo, 36, of 109 Bishop St. in Booneville - was arrested at the scene soon after the shooting, he said. The incident was reported about 10 p.m. Friday in the parking lot behind the gas and water department.
Naranjo had an initial appearance before Municipal Judge George Via on Monday, and is being held in Prentiss County Jail with no bond set, charged with one count of aggravated assault, Ramey said.
The police recovered a .9-mm handgun from Naranjo believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, and seven spent cartridges from the weapon were found at the scene, he said.
Another handgun, a .22-caliber revolver, was recovered from Cain's vehicle with one spent cartridge inside.
Ramey said witness interviews have been under way since early Saturday morning, but declined to offer any motive for the shooting since the victim has not yet been interviewed. He hopes to complete that interview this week, but said no other suspects are thought to be involved.
After the investigation the case will be presented to a Prentiss County grand jury, he said.
