Roundup: New Albany boys advance in 2OT

Eric Chaney scored 19 points Tuesday to lead the New Albany Bulldogs to a 63-60 double overtime victory against visiting Greenwood in the opening round of the MHSAA North 4A Tournament.

The Bulldogs (16-13) will play the Daily Journal’s top-ranked regular season team, Corinth (23-6), at 4 p.m. Thursday in the tournament quarterfinals at Corinth.

Greenwood’s Deandre Williams led all scorers with 27 points in a losing effort.

ALSO TUESDAY

(B) Ingomar 82, Montgomery County 52: The Falcons, headed up by first-year coach Jonathan Ashley, clinched a host berth for the North 1A Boys Tournament with their first-round win.

Henry Foster scored 32 points to lead Ingomar (23-12). The Falcons will play Biggersville at 4 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

(B) Corinth 75, Caledonia 46: Raheem Sorrell and Jose Contreras scored 15 points apiece to lead the Journal’s No. 1-ranked Warriors into a Class 4A North Mississippi quarterfinals game against New Albany.

The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday in Corinth, where the Warriors have won 18 straight.

(B) Biggersville 105, Vardaman 44: Daniel Simmons scored 25 to lead the Lions into the North 1A quarterfinals.

(B) Blue Mountain 76, Smithville 54: The Cougars (28-4) got 23 points from Jacob Girley and 21 from Trevario McClinton to advance to the North 1A Tournament quarterfinals at Ingomar.

Blue Mountain’s opponent at 7 p.m. will be Coldwater, a 90-39 winner over Greenville St. Joseph.

(B) Aberdeen 104, Independence 33: The Bulldogs scored 51 points in the first half of their North 4A Tournament opener. Rico Haughton scored 25 points to lead Aberdeen (22-7).

(B) Coahoma County 64, Potts Camp 55: Coahoma County eliminated the Cardinals in their North 2A opener and advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinal at Baldwyn against the host Bearcats.

Baldwyn defeated O’Bannon 79-63 Monday.

(B) Okolona 68, South Delta 56: Donovan Ivy scored 17, Rudell Bell 16 and Alex Clark 15 to lead the Chieftains to a North 2A win. Next up is Coahoma AHS in Thursday’s quarterfinals in Baldwyn.

(G) Canton 54, Oxford 41: The defending 4A state champion Lady Chargers saw their season end with a road loss.

(G) North Panola 57, Nettleton 46: Jabria Pounds scored 19 points for Nettleton, which saw its season end in North 3A play.
