OXFORD – Austin Anderson hit his first home run of the season and No. 7 Ole Miss shut out Southeastern Louisiana 2-0 on Tuesday.
The Rebels (12-1) had five hits, one each from five players.
Stuart Turner drove in Tanner Mathis with a double to left field in the fourth inning to stake Ole Miss to a 1-0 lead. Anderson’s home run to right field led off the sixth inning.
Josh Laxer (1-0) worked 51⁄3 innings and allowed four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Four Rebel pitchers combined in the shutout with Matt Denny and Tanner Bailey each taking the mound before Brett Huber picked up his fifth save of the season.
Kyle Cedotal (2-2) took the loss allowing two runs on five hits and three strikeouts across 5 innings.
“It was a terrific pitching performance by us today,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “Laxer had his best outing of the year. Denny and Bailey did what they have done all year long, which is really attack the strike zone in relief. Huber had a little more difficulty than normal in the ninth. Of course he strikes out the four-hole guy and the last guy to end the game.”
The Lions (8-3) had runners on the corner with two outs in the top of the sixth but couldn’t score.
No. 3 Mississippi State 14, Mississippi Valley State 2: Hunter Renfroe drove in four runs, Daryl Norris had a pair of RBIs and the Bulldogs (16-0) scored in the final 7 innings they had an at-bat. Luis Polorena struck out five in 31⁄3 scoreless innings to help MSU remain unbeaten.
