Chancery Judge Ed Roberts approved the inclusion – the equivalent of an ordered annexation – of the area in late February, after a year-long court review of the site and how Mississippi annexation law applies to it.
The nearly quarter-square-mile block is planned as the site of the new Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. It lies east of Old Taylor Road, south of Highway 6/278 and west of Lamar Boulevard.
“Once you annex an area … you have to come up with zoning,” Akers told members of the Oxford Planning Commission on Monday. He noted that details of the designation will have to be developed and presented to them in April.
The current hospital and much of the surrounding area is zoned Professional Business, which Akers said “allows too many uses that would detract from the hospital.”
