FEMA funding lie nets man sentence

ABERDEEN – Ronnie Beard of Okolona was sentenced to 12 months and a day for his guilty plea surrounding a false disaster benefits report.

Beard, 47, was indicted in December 2011 on two federal counts that he improperly took money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after falsely claiming storm damage to a residence on Country Road 157 outside Okolona.

He claimed the home was his primary residence, which is was not.

Without a plea deal, he faced up to 40 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock sentenced him and Beard paid $8,611 restitution.
