Southern Mississippi defeats SMU 74-70

DALLAS — Dwayne Davis scored 17 points to lead Southern Mississippi over SMU 74-40 Wednesday night, extending a winning streak to six games.

Davis was 6 of 10 from the field. Rashard McGill scored 14 points, and Jerrold Brooks and Cedric Jenkins scored 10 points apiece. Jonathan Mills had nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles (14-4, 3-0 Conference USA).

SMU (11-8, 1-3) led 32-26 at halftime. At 16:57 in the second half, McGill tied the game at 36 with a layup and a 3-pointer to put Southern Mississippi ahead. SMU came within one point, but the Golden Eagles remained in the lead.

Southern Mississippi shot 49 percent from the field, while SMU shot 46.9 percent. SMU outrebounded Southern Mississippi 33-27.

Jalen Jones scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs. Shawn Williams scored a career-high 17 points, Ryan Manuel had 14 and Nick Russell added 11.
