NEW ALBANY – The 18-wheeler hit by an eastbound BNSF train just west of New Albany on Thursday night was unable fully to cross the tracks.

Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said Cooley Transport driver Kelcey Barr was dropping off a trailer at the Newport Upholstery plant on Mississippi Highway 178 around 10 p.m.

“The gate was locked, and while they were waiting on someone to come unlock the gate, the train came,” Edwards said. “He couldn’t pull forward far enough to get off the tracks, and the train hit the rear section.”

While the trailer was demolished neither the truck driver nor any train crew members were injured.
