A slate of special guests includes Memphis television host Loretta McNary, who will film her show from the campus on Saturday, along with retired NBA basketball star Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway; Lil Round, a seventh-place finalist on "American Idol's" eighth season; and 2010 winner of "America's Next Top Model," Krista White.
"It's going to be bam, bam, bam, bam, action all day long," said Dwayne McCray, one of the event's organizers. "If you don't want to participate in the cake walk, there's bingo. If that's not for you, there are free information sessions on health, finance, education, legal issues and other things."
A community group organized as Community Connect has planned the Harvest Festival Expo for noon-8 p.m. Saturday and concluding with a gospel concert 3-5 p.m. Sunday.
"We are working hard to be sure there is something for everyone to enjoy," said Rebecca Spence, also one of the organizers.
Face painting, a hayride and other activities for children are part of the Saturday afternoon lineup of events, along with vendors throughout the day, followed in the evening by 3-on-3 basketball, a sorority step show and a community dance.
Sunday afternoon's program includes several well-known gospel groups, alternating with brief inspirational talks by the featured guests.
"This event is for everyone in the community, and we hope there will be a huge turnout," McCray said.
