Roye Green

BILOXI – Roye Green, 84, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Emeritus Assisted Living Center in Biloxi. He was born April 1, 1927, in Tibbee to Iona Bonds Green and Alexander Stewart Green. He was a retired vice president of construction/maintenance and engineering at Sara Lee/Bryan Foods. He was a member of First Baptist Church in West Point. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II.

Graveside services will be at noon Saturday, April 21, at Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Judge Lee Sorrels Coleman will officiate, and Kenny Green will assist. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dorothy Kellogg; and four brothers, Culton, Bernard, Alexander and Jack.

OXFORD – Carlton Cecil Staggs, 75, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

NETTLETON – Janette Elaine Owens Simmons, 54, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at her home. She was born Sept. 27, 1957, in Aberdeen to Boyd Alba and Artvie Palmer Owens. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She looked forward to spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Passionate about animals, her pets were her hobby. She enjoyed watching television with her husband and listening to country music.

She is survived by her husband, Harris Clay Simmons of Nettleton; daughter, Nickey Pope of Shreveport, La.; son, Zach Zepeda of Nettleton; stepson, Justin Simmons of Becker; sisters, Geneva Dodds of Aberdeen, Judy Hardeman of Montana, Pat Jones of Aberdeen, Shirley Owens of Nettleton and Betty Mills of Aberdeen; brother, Tony Owens of Saltillo; and seven grandchildren.

HICKORY FLAT – Bruce Hicks, 43, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at his home. He was born July 29, 1968, in Union County to Elvie Hicks and Betty Hicks Boatner. He was an employee of Riverside Traffic Systems. He was a member of the Amaziah Baptist Church.

He is survived by his stepfather and mother, John L. Boatner and Betty Hicks Boatner of Hickory Flat; two sisters, Patricia Higgins (Bo) of Hickory Flat and Vivian Kidd (Larry) of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Lawrence Hicks (Deloris) of Thaxton; his fiance, Jacqueline Lemly of Potts Camp; and six nieces and one nephew.

Glenn McCullough

TUPELO – Glenn Long McCullough, 83, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at his home after an extended illness. A fifth generation native of Tupelo and lifelong resident, he was born in the Tupelo Hospital March 4, 1929, to Glenn Lee and Margaret Long McCullough. Growing up in Tupelo, he was a member of the Bachelor’s Club and graduated from Tupelo High School in 1947. He earned a Bachelor of Science in agriculture from Mississippi State University in 1953. He served his country in the Mississippi Army National Guard and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for leadership in Korea in 1952. Known to his many friends as “Cotton,” he was a lifelong farmer and businessman who founded McCullough Steel Products in 1974. A conservative Republican, he served in the administration of Gov. Kirk Fordice. A dedicated Christian, lay minister and Bible school teacher, he was a faithful member of Lee Acres Church of Christ. He was a gifted storyteller and had a great love of history, particularly that of his home state. He loved his farm and was an avid bird watcher and gardener.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Tupelo Memorial Park with Minister Gordan Hogan and Dale Carr officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lanier Hudson McCullough of Tupelo; three children, Glenn McCullough Jr. (Laura) of Tupelo, Mary Connor Adcock of Tupelo and fiancé Wesley Victoria and Sarah McCullough; his sister, Mary McCullough Formby of Searcy, Ark.; three grandsons, Vance Hudson McCullough (Rachael) of Atlanta, Glenn Thomas McCullough (Sally Beth) of Starkville and David Shaw Adcock Jr. of Tupelo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul R. McCullough; and a sister, Edna McCullough Mitchell.

Pallbearers will be Vance H. McCullough, Glenn Thomas McCullough, D. Shaw Adcock, Dr. Robert A. Dale Jr., Dr. Kenneth P. Mitchell and Clifton O. Morrow.

James Jeter

FORT WORTH, Texas – James Carey Jeter, 63, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, in Fort Worth. He was born Sept. 15, 1948, in West Point to Alvanell Kennedy and Marvin Homer Jeter Sr. He was a graduate of Mississippi College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He served as a youth pastor at the University Baptist Church in Fort Worth and youth director at Colonial Heights Baptist Church and Carriage Hills Baptist Church. He was married to Karen Gower of Memphis in 1972.

The family and friends will congregate at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home to go in procession to the cemetery. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. A memorial celebration will be next week in Dallas-Fort Worth. Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his mother, Alvanell Jeter Christopher; his brother, Dr. Marvin Jeter Jr. and wife, Betty; two daughters, Angele Jeter and Renee Jeter; nephew, Marvin Jeter III and wife, Brenda; nieces, Elizabeth Cox and husband, Jason, and Janell Cason and husband, Garrick; two granddaughters, Hope Jones and Grace Jones; four great-nephews and one great-niece.

TISHOMINGO – Velma Alexander Allen, 81, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Tishomingo Community Living Center in Iuka. She was a native of Alabama and worked as a case worker for Tishomingo County. She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carters Branch Cemetery in Tishomingo with Bro. J.B. Burns officiating. Burial will be in Carters Branch Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home of Belmont is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include seven children, Perry Alexander of Flint, Mich., Marvin Allen (Terry) of Vaden, Phillip Allen, Gerry Allen (Ramona), Patricia Southward and Jerry Allen (Katie), all of Tishomingo, and Felecia Rogers (Jason) of Belmont; two brothers, Harold Alexander and Vester “Eddie” Alexander (Molly); one sister, Susie Thorn; two special grandsons, Brandon Allen and Jamie Allen; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Methyl Parker

TISHOMINGO – Methyl E. “Tiny” Parker, 86, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Tishomingo Community Living Center in Iuka after many years of illness. She was a native of Prentiss County. She had been an employee of Blue Bell and then was a retail store manager. She was a member of Tishomingo Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Tishomingo City Cemetery in Tishomingo with Bro. Robbie Crane officiating. Burial will be in Tishomingo City Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home of Belmont is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Hildred Tidwell of Belmont; one sister, Erin Callicutt of Virginia; one sister-in-law, Madine Tidwell of Monticello; son-in-law, Jimmy Ramsey of Iuka; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Cladron Parker; a daughter, Sherry Ramsey; a son-in-law, Billy Tidwell; her parents, John Elliott and Ella Autrey Elliott; five brothers; and four sisters.

HODGES, Ala. – Mildred Barnett Overton, 85, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

Ira Rupert

TUPELO – Ira Lee Rupert, 83, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born to Clarence Rupert and Annie Thompson in Clay County on Sept. 10, 1928. He was a member of Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church and the Henry Elks Lodge #781 where he served as a secretary for many years. He was an graduate of George Washington Carver High School and Alcorn State University and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired teacher for the Lee County School system. He was a quiet, private person who loved the 23rd Psalm, his church and spending time with his family and friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Long Sr., officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Porter’s Memorial Park. Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his uncles, Willie (Sue) Rupert, Henry Wallace (Louise) Rupert and Robert (Jimmie Mae) Rupert, all of Tupelo; two aunts, Lucille Randle of Cedar Bluff and Clara (Charles) Staples of Tupelo; a special cousin, Willie C. (Margaret) Randle of Cedar Bluff; two brothers-in-law, Cecil Brown and Knowledge Brown of Tupelo; special friends, Gwendolyn Ellis, Janet Hampton, L.C. Bownes and Ray Cole, all of Tupelo; and a host of nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Hampton Elks Lodge #781. Active pallbearers will be Deacons Board of Spring Hill M.B. Church.

RIPLEY – Lois A. McDonald, 52, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. She was born July 20, 1959, to Joanne Edgeston and Herman Edgeston. She was a member of Christ Is Life Ministry Church in Ripley.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem M.B. Church with Louie Banks officiating. Burial will be in Ruckersville Cemetery in Falkner.

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Larry Lavern McDonald; one daughter, Janay Shonte’ Oliver (Arthur Mane Oliver) of Savannah, Ga.; two grandchildren, Keiston Oliver and Kiora Oliver; four sisters, Joyce (Excell) Turner, Vickey Edgeston and Renea Edgeston, all of Ripley, and Penny Edgeston of Milwaukee, Wis.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Twenton Edgeston.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service time Saturday.
