Melvin M. Orr

WEST POINT - Melvin Matthews Orr, 84, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center, in West Point. He was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Dover, Fla., to Sarah Blanche Matthews Orr and Bedford Blake Orr. He and his wife were owners of Orr's TV Sales and Service for 33 years. Following his retirement from Orr's TV, he worked with the city of West Point Public Works Department for 18 years. He was a member of West Point Masonic Lodge 40 F.amp&A.M. where he was a 50-year member. He served with the City of West Point Auxillary Police for 29 years and also served as chief. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of U.S. Army and served with the Signal Corps during the Korean War. He married Anna Belle Coggins Orr on July 22, 1947, in Columbus.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Coggins officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Belle Coggins Orr of West Point; his daughters, Brenda Orr Andrews (Jerry) of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Malinda Orr of West Point; five grandchildren, Christy Wilder Green, Chris Dale Latham, Marcus Orr Taylor, Amanda Kaye Taylor and Sara E. Langford; three great-grandchildren, Avery Taylor, Marcus Orr Taylor Jr. and Lila Grace Taylor.

Six brothers preceded him in death.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Grubbs, Randy Jones, Claude Cartee Jr., Bill Saul, Robby Oswalt and Bill Ladd.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Dill, John Webb, Homer Ivy and Joey Wright.

Kermit McFerrin

MANTACHIE - Arthur Kermit McFerrin, 81, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Mantachie with Dr. John Adams, the Rev. Glyn Wiygul and the Rev. Tom Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Mantachie Cemetery. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home of Mantachie is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty J. White

ABILENE, Texas - Betty J. White, 77, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at an Abilene medical center. The daughter of Virgie Elaine Fowler Reagh and Oscar Reagh, she was born on Aug. 24, 1934, in Lee County. She graduated from high school in Belden. She married Loyce White on July 17, 1954, in Tupelo. In Abilene she was receptionist at the office of Carl Trusler, M.D., for 17 years, and since 2008 had worked in medical records for Cardiology Consultants. She was a member of Wylie Baptist Church in Abilene.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wylie Baptist Church with the Rev. Donny Harbers officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The Hamil Family Funeral Home of Abilene, Texas, is in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include her three daughters, Suzanne Staggs (Shannon) of Abilene, Melissa Sparks of Abilene, and Cheryl Evridge (Bill) of Waco, Texas; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyce White, on Jan. 10, 2008; a great-grandson, Riley Sparks; her parents; and one brother, Jerry Reagh.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Evridge, Joshua Evridge, Keith Sparks, Darrin Black, Gerald Reider and Shannon Staggs.

Ruby Garrison

MOBILE, Ala. - Ruby Louise Paulk Garrison died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala. She was born on March 9, 1914, in Tupelo to Robert Jonathan Paulk and Caroline Elizabeth Faires Paulk. She was a teacher, dean, editor and widow of Denby Garrison Sr. A graduate of Blue Mountain College, she was student body president and later served as dean of students. A secondary teacher, she became the first hostess on the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad, a position created by Isaac Tigrett, president. A woman of versatile talents, she was editor of the GM&O News, served as the first Dean of Students of Mobile College (now University of Mobile), and was hostess for the corporate guest home of Vanity Fair. A charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and earlier a member of First Baptist and Springhill Baptist of Mobile, she filled many positions of leadership and taught a Sunday school class for more than 50 years. Her life was blessed with wonderful, loving, caring friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Denby Garrison Jr.; a sister, Mildred Paulk Anderson (Dr. W.H.); and two brothers, Joyce Paulk and Lester Paulk.

She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Ann Garrison (Denby Jr.) of Lafayette, La; a granddaughter, Patricia Garrison Muse (William) of Birmingham, Ala.; nieces, Jane Anderson Preston (Dr. William H. Jr.) of Boonville, Nancy Paulk Anderson of New York, N.Y., Sylvia Paulk Rhodes (Roy) of Santa Fe, N.M.; grandnephew, Dr. William Anderson Preston (Kim) of Jackson, Tenn.; grand and great nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be at Pine Crest Funeral Home in Mobile from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday with services at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, Ala.

Kenneth Stanley

GUNTOWN - Charles Kenneth Stanley, 75, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House. A lifelong Lee County resident, he was born Nov. 13, 1936, to Joseph Dewey and Katie Atwell Bentley Stanley. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Saltillo. He enjoyed camping, traveling, cooking, baking, gardening and especially time spent with family and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Pastor Michael Stanley Felkins officiating. Dr. Marvin Murphy will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Alice McCullough Stanley of Guntown; three children, Pastor Michael Stanley Felkins (Stacy) of Ames, Iowa, Cindy Stanley Miles of Tremont and Missy Stanley Cates (Tracy) of Guntown; eight grandchildren, Samantha, Alex and Mac Felkins, Brittany and Blake Miles, Brock and Kennedy-Grace Cates and Kellie Stanley Moore (Jesse); one great-grandson, Dillan Moore; two sisters, Louise Reeder and Martha Easterling of Saltillo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Anthony Stanley, on Jan. 17, 2012; three brothers and one sister.

Pallbearers will be Steve Carlock, Terry Herring, Jim Peach, Dale Brock and Terry Stanley.

THAXTON - John Buchanan, 75, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was a member of Hurricane Baptist Church, a Mason and self-employed in the construction business. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Hurricane Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Merritt and Rev. Philip Brock officiating. Burial will follow in the Warren Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Bivivian Russell Buchanan; one daughter, Debbie Buchanan Murrah (Danny Murrah); one son: Timothy David Buchanan (Reena Helms Buchanan); five grandchildren, Carrie Murrah Duran (Michael Duran), Christy Murrah Knighton (Corey Knighton), Emily Buchanan Rayburn (Matt Rayburn), Rachel Buchanan and Kaitlin Buchanan; three great-grandsons, Hayden Duran, Cohen Knighton and Gibson Rayburn; two sisters: Opal Buchanan Watson and Ethylene Buchanan Privett; and half brother, Mike Russell (Karen).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Buchanan and Hessie Buchanan Russell; stepfather, Marvin Russell; and his siblings, Wilma Russell Whitworth, Barbara Russell, Duel Russell, Lynder Russell, Laymon Russell, Troy Russell, Leson Russell, Merrel Russell Henson and Luster Russell.

SHADY POINT, Okla. - Paige Breanne Underwood, 16, died Thursday, May 17, 2012, in Calhoun, Okla., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Jimmie Brown

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Jimmie Brown, 87, died Friday, May 18, 2012, in her home. She was born in Amory on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925, and moved to Aberdeen. She graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1942, attended Mississippi College for Women, then transferred to the University of Mississippi, graduating in 1946. She was a lifetime member of the Phi Mu sorority. She was a longtime member and elder of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Knoxville. She was very active in the Concord Hills Women's Group, Bible Study Group and Book Club. Some of her numerous memberships included: The Town of Farragut Volunteer Program, The Art's Council, The Knoxville Chapter Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, The Questers Tanasie Chapter, The Dogwood Arts Festival and The Knoxville Symphony Showhouse. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville in 1983 and 1984 plus enjoyed her tennis at the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tupelo. Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her daughter, Katharine Brown; grandchildren, Robert Butturini (Allison), Evans Butturini, Katie Butturini and Riley Butturini; brother, John Lann Owens (Jane); sister, Martha O. Booth; nieces, Mae Booth Forbes, Denise Owens, Melanie Owens Milner, Meg Owens Burns, Ann Caroline Brown Taylor, Mary Margaret Brown; and nephews, George H. Booth III and John Lann Owens Jr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Brown; her parents, W.G. Owens and Erbie Mae Owens; brother, W.G. amp"Buddyamp" Owens (Nancy); and niece, Glenda Owens.

WEST POINT - Clarice Emilie Ellis Farrish, 74, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point. She was born Dec. 23, 1937, in West Point to Louise Johann Ellis and Raymond Fuller Ellis. She had worked at the Mississippi Industry for the Blind for several years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Joy Seitz WMU Group. She was a graduate of Blue Mountain College. She was a proud mother and grandmother. She married Willie Elton Farrish on June 27, 1964; he preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 1992.

Services will be at 3 p.m Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Funderburg officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Ray Farrish (Shawna) of Stockton, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jilliyn and Jack; her three brothers, Robert Ellis (Laura) of Castleberry, Ala., Edwin Ellis (Diane) of Starkville, Henry Ellis (Patricia) of Fayetteville, N.C.; and her sister-in-law, Virginia Ellis of West Point.

Her brother, John Ellis, preceded her in death.

Sammy Darwin

IUKA - James Samuel Darwin Jr., 59, also known as Rusty Walker, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was an active member of Mt. Evergreen United Methodist Church, where he served in many key church positions. He graduated from Corinth High School in 1971, and went on to become one of the top radio programming consultants in the music industry. He has either programmed, advised, created, consulted, overseen, served as a strategic partner, or performed as an air personality for more than 750 radio stations since he started his radio career in 1970. He founded Rusty Walker Programming Consultants in 1983. He was honored as one of three of Country Radio's Greatest Programmers of the Twentieth Century. Billboard Magazine has named Rusty Walker the Country Music Consultant of the Year for seven years in a row, and he was inducted into the Country Radio Hall of Fame in February. He also served as a Director-At-Large in the Country Music Association.

He was proud to call Iuka home, and was an active and dedicated member of his community. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Tishomingo County School System and volunteered in many civic capacities, including serving as the regular emcee of the Iuka Christmas Parade and as a member of the Iuka Heritage Day Committee Board of Directors.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Mt. Evergreen United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Tishomingo County High School Gymnasium the Rev. Robert Armstrong and the Rev. Ron Norvell officiating. The body will lie in repose at the gymnasium from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Teresa Darwin of Iuka; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jackie and Burnette Bryant of Iuka; two daughters, Nikki Darwin Clark (Nathaniel) of Iuka and Beth Darwin Huntley (Ryan) of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Harold Darwin (Jeanette) of Corinth one sister, Sarah Darwin of Iuka; two grandchildren, McCarthy Huntley and Alexander Clark; a sister-in-law, Lisa Locke (Jerry) of Iuka; and a brother-in-law, Keith Bryant of Iuka.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jay Darwin; a daughter, Kinsley Darwin; and his parents, Jimmy and Mollie Darwin.

Lee Sutherland

VARDAMAN - Lee B. "Jr." Sutherland, 52, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at his home. He was born Dec. 4, 1959, in West Point. He was a maintenance supervisor for Edmondson Farms and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was a very active member of the VHS Booster Club and will be greatly missed by the VHS students and alumni. He loved his pet, Annie.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman with Bro. Michael Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery at Vardaman.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Lisa Baker Sutherland of Vardaman; his mother, Margaret Lounez Reedy Sutherland Vandiver of Vardaman; four sisters, Donna (Rick) Hegwood of Pittsboro, Robbie (Charles) Bennett of West Point, Nancy (Jerry) Dillon of Fresno, Ohio, and Margaret (John) Stowers of Moorhead; one brother, Steve (Carol) Sutherland of Vardaman; 19 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lee B. Sutherland.

Charlie Roach

TUPELO - Charles Richard "Charlie" Roach, 54, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a sudden illness. A Farmington native, he was born Nov. 19, 1957, to Jesse Lee and Mary Jeanette Parker Roach and had lived over 40 years in Tupelo. He was currently employed by I. H. Services at Cooper Tire. He had previously served as a volunteer fireman with the Plantersville Fire Department. He was an avid NASCAR fan, especially Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr., an avid Ole Miss fan, and he enjoyed fishing and camping, boating and taking care of his Grand Banks Cabin Cruiser He was a child at heart and if his body had been as young as his spirit, he would have lived forever.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Wexford Parmer officiating. Burial will be in Campbelltown Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Roach Harris of Tupelo and Kelsey Roach of Guntown; one son, James Michael Roach (Donna) of Shannon; his mother, Mary J. Roach of Saltillo; one sister, Goldie B. Dickey (Ralph) of Saltillo; one brother, Jesse Lee "Butch" Roach Jr. (Pamela Renee) of Montgomery, Ala.; two grandaughters, A'lexus Roach and Zabien Roach; four grandsons, Santanna Roach, Jesse M. Roach, Zachery Roach and Lucas Roach.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, James Aaron Roach.

Pallbearers will be George Wilson, Ralph Dickey Jr., Chris Parker, Bob Davis, Lanny Roach, Kenneth Ray, G.M. Dutcher and Michael Seymore.

Bill McKinney

BOONEVILLE - William Lee "Bill" McKinney, 75, died Saturday in Prentiss County as the result of an auto accident. He was a member of the Gaston Baptist Church. He was a retired employee with 40 years of service at John Mansville Corp. He was an avid racer and began his career as a drag racer, then a round track racer. He was an engine mechanic and consultant for several race teams in the area. He enjoyed sports and watching western movies. He was an Army veteran.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Gaston Baptist Church with Bro. Matt Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Gaston Cemetery.Waters Funeral Home of Baldwyn is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Juda Keeton McKinney of Booneville; a daughter, Nicole Louise Lozano (Clem) of Booneville; sons, Craig Lee McKinney (Donna) of Zion, Ill., Barry Wayne McKinney (Kim) of Booneville; sisters, Pauline Lauderdale (K-Boy), Marjorie Maurine Leathers, Elizabeth Newcomb (Jim); brothers, James T. Ruby Gideon

SPLUNGE - Ruby Elaine Murphy Gideon, 94, died on Monday, May 21, 2012, at her residence. Born on June 24, 1917, in Splunge, she was a daughter of the late William Clabe and Rosie Murphy. She attended Splunge School and graduated from Greenwood Springs High School, Class of 1935. She married Woodie Creston Gideon on Oct. 22, 1938. Always trying to put God first in her life, she was a member of Christian Chapel Church of Christ. A homemaker, she enjoyed flower gardening, working in her yard, talking with her friends, and listening to a'cappella gospel music.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. today at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Marshall Eubanks Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jolly, Terry and Barry Faulkner; Joe Easter; Jerry Hall; and Chase Surrell. Honorary pallbearers will be Joshua Gideon and Brad Starr.

She is survived by her son, Timothy Gideon (Mary Ann) of Splunge; grandchildren, Joshua Gideon and Whitney Starr (Brad); great-grandchildren, Drew and Ayden Gideon, and Brannan and Macie Starr; niece and nephews, Brenda Fears, Jolly Faulkner and Daniel Murphy; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Francis M. Faulkner; and brothers, Homer and Max Murphy.

She retired from Mississippi Valley Gas Company after 29 years of service. She was a member of Ballardsville Baptist Church.

HOUSTON - Charles Finley Bounds, 83, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Calhoun County to Timothy Bounds and Clara Ethel Boland Bounds. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Houston. He retired from West Point Casket. He helped others in need by opening his home and Charlie B's Lake for Christian fellowship. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant on the front lines of Korea and also served in the U.S. National Guard.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home in Houston with Bro. Daniel Herringa and Bro. Mike Dearman officiating. Burial will be Chickasaw Memorial Gardens in Houston. Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
