Mary Catherine Younk
CANTON, Mich. – Mary Catherine "Kay" (Nagel) Younk passed away June 2, 2012 at Waltonwood Assisted Living Canton, Michigan. Kay was born in Fort Madison, Iowa on September 16, 1923, the daughter of Vincent C. Nagel and Minnie L. (Rump) Nagel.
She grew up in Fort Madison and attended St. Joseph's school, graduating in June
1941, and went on to attend Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. She was employed for a brief time at the Sheaffer Pen & Pencil Company prior to marrying her childhood sweetheart, William "Ed" Younk on 27 June 1942 in St. Joseph's Church in Fort Madison. Ed and Kay celebrated nearly 59 years of marriage prior to his death in 2001.
Much of Kay's life was spent traveling the world with their sons, Bill and Jim, to live with her husband who was a member of the United States Air Force for 29 years. These locations included Japan, where she served as President of the Tachikawa Officers' Wives Club and Ankara, Turkey, as well as a number of cities and states in the United States until he retired.
In 1970 Ed and Kay moved to Lexington Kentucky, where Ed was employed as an instructor at the University of Kentucky. Kay was active in volunteer activities, serving as the President of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Good Samaritan Hospital.
Subsequently, Ed accepted a position with the University of Mississippi, Tupelo, MS campus. Kay continued to be active in volunteer activities in Tupelo.
Kay was able to make many challenging moves with Ed, Bill and Jim and their household goods abroad and in the US, starting over each time with new lifestyles, schools for the boys, churches, and friends, etc., at times over-coming all odds to enjoy life wherever they lived.
Kay loved being the wife of Ed Younk and sharing their 59 years together! She also had artistic, creative talent that she practiced in many of their various locations. She loved sewing clothes, knitting garments and painting. Kay was also a friend to all those she kept near and dear to her heart.
In 2009 Jim convinced his mother, Kay, to make a move from Tupelo, MS to Canton, MI to be where he could keep a loving eye on her. She entered Waltonwood Senior Community where she resided until her death. Jim has not only watched over her but he has surely been "his mother's keeper."
