Pearlie Mae Adams

ABERDEEN - Funeral services for Pearlie Mae Adams, 96, will be at noon Friday at Bethesda Church on Daybrite Drive in Tupelo with the Rev. Kenneth Jernigan officiating. Williams Memorial of Okolona is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Dec. 18, 1915, to Archie Conaway and Annie Dance Adams. She was a homemaker. She lived in Detroit, Mich., for more than 40 years. In Detroit she was a member of the Ecclesia Temple. She returned to Mississippi and had lived in Tupelo for the past six years.

Survivors include four daughters, Venell Burnette (Franklin), Darnell Cooke and Wonzie Sanders, all of Detroit, and Vernita Love (Thomas) of Tupelo; two sons, Charles (Sandra) Adams of Atlanta and Vincent Mark of New Orleans.; 16 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Alma Adams, and three sisters, Janie, Clarie and Lillian.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wilburn Bruce

SHERMAN - Wilburn Eugene Bruce, 75, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at his daughter's residence in Sherman. He was born Dec. 25, 1936, in New Albany to Walter Frank Bruce and Vertie Faye Kiddy Bruce. He worked for 30 years as a truck driver independently contracted through the United States Postal Service. He enjoyed working in the yard, taking things apart and reassembling them, golfing, and woodworking. He was of the Baptist faith.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Bobby Holland officiating. Private interment will be in Sherman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time only at the Tupelo Chapel. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Ruth Bruce; his three daughters: Sharon Minissale (Kevin) of Gun Barrel City, Texas, Kathy Cormier of Tupelo and Melanie Hendrix (Ralph McGreger) of Blue Springs; a brother, Wain Bruce (Linda) of Texarkana, Texas; two sisters: Dorothy amp"Dotamp" Terry and Barbara Leeton (Dwight), both of Water Valley; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William "Bill" Bruce.

John E. Oden

GREENWOOD - Funeral services for John E. Oden will be at 11 a.m. today at Wilson and Knight Chapel in Greenwood. Dr. Jim Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Kosciusko City Cemetery.

He was born in Kosciusko on Aug. 11, 1936. He was a graduate of Kosciusko High School, Holmes Junior College and Mississippi State University. He had a classified military career with O.I.S. and C.I.A and he was manager of American General Financial Services for 38 ? years, retiring in 1998. He was an active member of North Greenwood Baptist Church, where he had served as trustee and deacon, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School and Church Training director, Brotherhood president and he served on numerous church committees. He was a member of numerous singing groups including 22 years with the Singing Deacons and nine years with the Good Friends Quartet.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan Gatewood Oden; two daughters, Jennifer Darnell (Chuck) of Hot Springs, Ark., and Jan Williams (Steve) of Grenada; a granddaughter, Kailey Williams, and a grandson, Drew Williams, both of Grenada; his sister, Jane Myers (Bob) of Tupelo; a brother- in- law, Davis Thompson of Kosciusko; nephews, Casey Myers (Amy) of Southaven, Steve Thompson (Paula) of Florence and Chad Thompson (Alysha) of Kosciusko.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Waudine Oden; a daughter, Cheryl Denise Oden; a sister, Sharon Thompson; and a niece, Melisa Matthews.

Pallbearers will be Henry Blount, David Edwards, Tommy Ellett, Kip Farrell, Knox James, Joe Morgan, Tracy Moser and Dick Williams.

John Pilkington

OXFORD - John Pilkington died Monday, June 4, 2012, at his home in Oxford. He was professor emeritus of English at the University of Mississippi. He was a 1940 graduate of Centre College in Danville, Ky. He pursued graduate study in English at Johns Hopkins University for a year before he was commissioned an ensign in the Navy in February 1942. He retired with the rank of lieutenant commander and continued his graduate education, receiving the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. In 1952, he joined the English Department at Ole Miss as an assistant professor.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John Semmes will officiate. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the fellowship hall.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lillian "Lolly" Kirk Pilkington, whom he married in 1943; son, Charles Kirk Pilkington (Annie Lee) of Charlottesville, Va.; three grandsons, Taylor, Carter and Vance; a sister, Grace Pilkington Harper of Panama City Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Frances T. Bryant

RALEIGH, N.C. - Frances Farley Thornton Bryant, 91, died Friday, June 1, 2012, in Raleigh, N.C. She was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Madison, Ala., to Herbert Lafayette Thornton and Frances Lorinda Farley. She was the wife of the late Stephen Hampton Bryant Sr. She graduated from Riverside High School in Decatur, Ala., and received a teaching certificate from Florence State Teachers' College in Florence, Ala. She reared her three children in West Point. Her later years were spent in Tupelo and Raleigh, N.C. She was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ; a devoted wife; a loving mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother; a dear daughter, sister, and aunt; and a kind friend and mentor. She served her community as a leader of the New Century Club of West Point and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served her Lord in the First Baptist Church of West Point, Calvary Baptist Church of Tupelo and Forest Hills Baptist Church of Raleigh. She taught adult Sunday School for many years, sang in the senior adult choir, led Woman's Missionary Union groups and ministered to others through intercessory prayer. An avid reader and library user, she reviewed many a book for various groups.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tupelo Memorial Park in Tupelo. A memorial service will take place in Raleigh, N.C., at a later date. Bryan-Lee Funeral Home of Raleigh, N.C., is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her sister, Lorinda T. Williams of Hollywood, Fla.; her brother, William G. Thornton (Joanne Rowe) of Rio Rancho, N.M.; her son, Stephen H. Bryant Jr. (Dorene Woods) of Rowlett, Texas; her daughters, Nancy K. Bryant of Huntsville, AL; and Carolyn Sue B. Farr (Rogers) of Raleigh, N.C.; her grandchildren, Stephen H. Bryant III (Amy Lucas) of Ft. Worth, Texas, Emily B. Mize (Shane) of The Woodlands, Texas, and William W. Bryant (Sally Sarrett) of Portland, Ore/; great-granddaughter, Claire A. Mize of The Woodlands, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy T. Cooper and Elizabeth T. Watkins.

Col. Billy Steele

WEST POINT - Col. Billy Dick Steele, 92, died Monday, June 4, 2012, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point. He was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Brookston, Texas, to Byrdie Gosa Steele and George T. Steele. At a young age, he moved to the Palo Alto community of Clay County, where he lived and spent most of his life. A veteran of World War II, he served first in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged as 2nd lieutenant. Then he served as a pilot in the United States Air Force, retiring as colonel after a total of 28 years of military service. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder. He married Kathryn Hill Steele on Aug. 27, 1951. They traveled extensively around the world throughout his military career, including more than 40 countries. His wife preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 2009.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale Funderburg officiating. Burial with United States Air Force military honors will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, B.W. and Ruth Hill; brother-in-law, Hal Hill Sr.; his nieces and nephew, Sandra Hill Crawford (Mac), Dr. Hal Hill Jr. (Susan), Debbie Hill Billington (Bill), Angie Hill McCollum (Craig) and Donna Hill Ross (Scott); and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

NEW ALBANY - Charles Travis McMillen, 86, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at the Countrywood Personal Care Home in Mantachie. He was born in New Albany on July 26, 1925, to John Joe Jackson McMillen and Arabelle Hurley McMillen. He was the longtime owner and operator of McMillen Grocery Store in the Martintown community. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Martin Baptist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Martin Baptist Church with Bro. Andy Russell and Bro. Chip Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Martin Cemetery. United Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Tim McMillen (Donna) of Batesville; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther Todd McMillen; son, Ronald McMillen; and granddaughter, Marjorie Colburn.

Born on Dec. 25, 1918, in Millport, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Tillman and Annie Leonard Mathis. On Sept. 28, 1940, she married Raymond Wesley Aldridge in Lowndes County. Formerly of Caledonia, she was a homemaker. A woman of strong faith, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Amory. Passionate about her family, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today at Egger Cemetery in Caledonia with Dr. Allen Simpson officiating. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Everyone is asked to gather at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. today for the procession to the cemetery.

Arvis Stephenson

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. - Arvis D. Stephenson, 90, died on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn. Born on May 16, 1922, in Splunge, he was a son of the late Albert and Ivy Sullivan Stephenson. He was a graduate of Smithville High School, Class of 1940. Honorably serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a turret gunner based in Deopham Green, Germany, he became a POW after his plane was shot down on their 35th mission. He married Mavis K. Pearce on Nov. 19, 1945. Working as a farmer in Smithville and a business owner in Memphis, he retired in 1992, as a helicopter specialist with the US Army Material Command Center, St. Louis, Mo. He was a member of Macon Road Church of Christ in Memphis, where he served on the security detail and was their former groundskeeper. He was instrumental in organizing the annual 452nd Bomber Squadron Reunion and enjoyed their fellowship together. A hard-worker who was a good husband and dad, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening and listening to old country music.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 a.m. today at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Minister Jeff Hortonofficiating. Burial will follow in Pearce Chapel Cemetery.

He is survived by his son, Dwight Stephenson (Margaret) of Bartlett, Tenn.; granddaughters, Amy Smith (Patrick) of Roswell, Ga., and Robin Gilbert (Bryce) of Williston, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Carson and Jackson Smith, and Logan and Lilly Gilbert; and nephew, Danny Stephenson.

OXFORD - Maudie Appleton Haley, 84, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. She was born and attended school in Sardis. She graduated from Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston and later attended the University of Mississippi, where she was employed for 44 years, from 1948-1992. She was a retired administrative assistant to Vice Chancellor Bryant. She also worked with Ed Meek in the Public Relations Department at Ole Miss. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

RICHMOND - Thurman Edward Gann, 79, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at his residence. Born March 8, 1933, he was a son of Garvin and Effie Mae Brown Gann. Before his retirement, he was a construction worker. He was a member of Richmond Pentecostal Church. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served during the Korean War as an MP. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening.

She was a lifelong resident of Nettleton. She was a retired sweamstress and a member of Nettleton Pentecostal Church. She enjoyed camping, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Andrea Beene

BOONEVILLE - Andrea Scyene Beene, 51, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill M.B. Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Patterson Memorial Chapel of Corinth is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Friday at the church.

Bobby Beard

OKOLONA - Bobby Dean Beard, 70, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 30, 1941, in Okolona to Felix Beard and Mamie Lois Pilgreen Beard. He lived his life in Okolona where he married Glenda Carroll Putt and raised a family. He patriocally served his country in the U.S. National Guard. He later owned and operated Oakland Furniture Company and Seminole Furniture Company for 50 years before retiring. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all types of athletic sports, especially football, supporting all Mississippi college teams and knowing all about players on NFL teams. Passionate about listening to gospel music and eating, he loved life and lived it to the fullest.

A celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Okolona Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Tony Rooks officiating. Burial will follow in Boone's Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. to service time Friday.

His survivors include his wife, Glenda Carroll Beard of Okolona; two sons, Jimmy Beard (Vickie) and Ronnie Beard, all of Okolona; three brothers, Alva Beard (Sue) on Amory, Amon Beard and Edward Beard (Martha), all of Okolona; three grandchildren, Morgan Leigh Beard, Allison Beasley and Taylor Beard; one great-grandson, Dawson Beasley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Brenda McCreight, Linda Kimbrell and Glenda Seymore; one son, Johnny Lynn Beard; and a grandson, Matthew Mattox.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Edwards, Dr. Robert Foster, Mark Perry, Donald Maharrey, Joe Moore and Steve Long. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Ray and Lamar Phillips.
