WREN – Waymon Gaines, 78, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Community Hospice at Darlington Oaks. He was born in LaPanto, Ark., on Feb. 15, 1934, to Howard McGrew and Emily Lucille Parchman Gaines. He loved fishing, playing cards, his animals and spending time with his family.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Blake McCain officiating. Burial will be in Verona City Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Angela Phillips (David) of Wren; three grandsons, Chase Gaines (fiancée, Lucian), Cody Phillips and Cole Phillips, all of Wren; one stepson, David Newell (Becky) of Mooreville; two sisters, Doris Causey of Verona and Lois Seymore (Robert) of Shannon; four brothers, James Gaines of Verona, Glen Gaines of Tupelo, Larry Gaines (Mary) of Odenville, Ala., and Richard Gaines (Marilyn) of Pulaski, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rachael Moore Gaines; two sisters, Nadine Clardy and Shirley Mauldin; and two brothers, Billy Gaines and Milton Gaines.

OXFORD - Neil Hix McKenzie, 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford. Born in Ashland on July 9, 1928, he was the son of Sen. Larkin Tarrant McKenzie and Charlotte Valeria Hix McKenzie. He served in the Army in Korea in Intelligence and Reconnaissance, assigned to the Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 32 Infantry Regiment, 7th Division. He received numerous decorations and commendations. He was a member of Patty Rice Post 4800 VFW, Glen Crosby Post 165 American Legion and Grenada Co. 29 DAV. He owned Neil H. McKenzie Company and Double G. Ranch. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Macklyn Hubbell officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his son, John Martin Jack McKenzie of Oxford and sister, Beth M. Welch of Starkville.

WEST POINT - Betty Joe Simmons Armstrong, 83, passed away, on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Waverly Personal Care Home in West Point. She was born Dec. 30, 1928, in Alcorn County to Lessie Hopper Simmons and Joe Simmons. Moving to West Point in 1985, she was a homemaker. Years before she worked in the office of Coca Cola Bottling Company of Corinth. She was a member of Kossuth United Methodist Church. She married Vernon D. Armstrong on Nov. 12, 1952, in Kossuth. He preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2004.
State room services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvert Funeral Home with the Rev. Patricia Cantrell Harris officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. at Wheeler Grove Cemetery in Kossuth. Family and friends will gather at the cemetery at 2:15 p.m. for a brief visitation. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include daughters, JoAn Tedford (Jimmy) of West Point; one son, Jimmy V. Armstrong (Christine) of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Jamey Tedford, Nancy Tedford, Tina Tedford-Ivy (Marty), Dana Brooks (Doyle Jr.), Adam Armstrong and Lee Armstrong; two great-grandchildren, Cody Deneice and Jay Robert Deneice; and nieces and nephews.
