Dee Holliday Jr.

FALKNER - Winford Dee Holliday Jr., 64, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at his residence. He was born Jan. 4, 1945, to W.D. Holliday Sr. and Bernice Jones Holliday. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

There were no services.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Lewellen Holliday of Falkner; three sons, Blaine Holliday (Claudia) of Tupelo, and Johnny Holliday (Beverly) and Kelly Holliday, both of Falkner; and three grandchildren, Brianna Holliday of Falkner, and Cade Holliday and Laura Holliday, both of Tupelo.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Holliday.

Percy Grubbs

TUPELO - Percy C. Grubbs, 91, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in Tupelo. He was born Aug. 6, 1917, in Union County to Lloyd F. and Climmie Pannell Grubbs. He married Connie Rye on Valentine's Day, 1948. They made their first home in Tupelo, then lived in Jackson for 20 years. He worked for McLaurin Ice Cream Co. and later for Borden's, retiring after 32 years. He began a new career in 1972 as a salesman for Sears at their Metrocenter store in Jackson. He retired from Sears in 1982 and returned to Tupelo. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving 40 months in the European Theater. He was awarded four Bronze Stars and received other commendations. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He and his wife were among the first members of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Tupelo and were members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. In 1999 they moved into a Lakeside South Cottage at Traceway Retirement Center in Tupelo. He enjoyed working in his yard and leading tours in the United States and Canada with friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Tupelo. Dr. Rick Brooks will officiate, and the Rev. Jack Williams will assist. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Connie Rye Grubbs of Tupelo; one son, Ray (Debra) of Ridgeland; one grandson, Michael, of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Rev. Trent Grubbs (Evelyn) of New Albany; two sisters-in-law, Rev. Mildred Board Grubbs of Tupelo and Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Zelma Whitehead of Nettleton, and her daughter, Kay, of Belden; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, William L. "Bill," Holder, Byron and Erby; and a sister, Beulah Grubbs Greer.

Pallbearers will be Jim Langston, Bobby Daniels, Johnny Brown Lee, Marvin Hurdle, Terry Simons, Ted Gordon, Bob Smith and Flois Conn.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Mildred Horton

BOONEVILLE - Mildred Sartin Horton, 92, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis after a brief illness. She was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Prentiss County to Tom and Nona Hill Sartin. She retired from Prentiss Manufacturing after 38 years. She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities. She did volunteer work for Bibles for China. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. C.D. Edge, Bro. Gary Glazier and Bro. Bobby Hankins officiating. Burial will be in Booneville Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia McDonald and Betty Mason (Jimmie), both of Memphis; two sons, Howard Horton (Kay) of Memphis and Stanley Horton (Janie) of Corinth; one sister, Katherine Rodriguez of Conroe, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Deborah Lambert (Jim), Johnny Mason (Maxine), Tim Horton (Kim), Charlotte Groff, Terry Morton (Martha), Robie Horton, Stan Horton (BJ), Jeff Horton, Emily Trostel, Kevin Horton, Shaun Horton (Jodie) and Mark Horton; 15 great-grandchildren, Nick Lambert, Lindsey Horton, Daniel Horton, Erica Lambert, Brittany Butler, Layla Horton, Madison Horton, Dustin Jackson, Caitlin Horton, Jakob Horton, James Trostel, Hannah Horton, Audrey Trostel, Skylee Horton and Stan Horton; two great-great-grandchildren, Lacey Lambert and Tyler Butler; a special niece, Susan Sartin; a host of other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy C. Horton; five brothers, Walter, Adrian, Herman, Junior and Gerald Wayne Sartin; four sisters, Mabel Bellamy, Doris Offord, Mary Horton and Zelma Scruggs; two grandsons, James Mason and Stephen Horton; a great-granddaughter, Paige Horton; and a son-in-law, Joe McDonald.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be until service time today at the funeral home.

Stephen Strange Sr.

ZION, Ill. - Stephen C. Strange Sr., 76, formerly of Round Lake, Ill., died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Vista East-Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan, Ill. He was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Augusta, Ill., to Margaret and Fern Hall Strange. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winthrop Harbor, Ill., and the Laborers' Union Local 152 in Highland Park, Ill. He loved animals, nature and taking nature walks with his grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ringa Funeral Home in Lake Villa, Ill. Cremation rites will be accorded after the service.

Survivors include his children, Cheryl Sewell and Carolyn Hart, both of Tennessee, Julie Sagel of Waukegan, Tammy Isaacs of Minnesota, Dianna Doyle and Tim Strange, both of Antioch, Ill., Stephen Strange Jr. of Beach Park, Ill., and Johnny Strange and Billy Strange, both of Wisconsin; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; his sisters and brothers of the Booneville area, Juanita Cox, Leta Mason, Mary Krueger, Ronald Curtis, Jimmy Curtis, Tony Curtis, Peggy Spain, Clayton Jerry Strange, Emily Marie Byers, Carylin June Hedstrom and Marylin Judie Gills.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jerry Curtis, Davey Curtis and Phillip Curtis.

Sue Holder

AUBURN - Mary Sue Holder, 73, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born June 30, 1935, in the Ratliff community to Marshall and Jessie Reynolds Sheffield. In 1955 she graduated from Mantachie High School and married Chester Holder on April 30 of that same year. She was a nine-year cancer survivor. Before her health failed she was very active in her church, Auburn Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and singing in the choir. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and time they spent together, and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and other needlecrafts. She was known as "Grandmother" to everyone in the community and could always be counted on for her wise words of counsel and encouragement.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Terry Pierce and the Rev. Paul Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Chester Holder of Tupelo; two daughters, Patricia Gayle Jones (Newell "Butch") of Tupelo and Mitzi Vaughn (Alan) of Madison, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Matthew Williams (Jonna), Amanda Timms (David), Trish Timms (Roger), Mindy Campbell (Mitch), Jeremy McCuller (fiancampée, Amber Westmoreland), Tiffany Rock and Zachary "Bub" Rock; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Faye Massey, Janice Webb (Lowell) and Frances Bearden (Gary); five brothers, Bobby Gene Sheffield, Gerald Sheffield (Charlene), Billy Ralph Sheffield (Virginia), David Sheffield (Linda) and Danny Sheffield (Brenda).

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sarah Farrar.

Pallbearers will be Phil Holder, Robert Holder, Brad Sheffield, Doug Farrar, Will Webb, Jackie Massey, Alan Sheffield and Brian Sheffield.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sammy Holder, Tommy Kemp, James Kemp and Randy Massey.

BLUE SPRINGS - James Albert "Jimmy" Crumpton, 47, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at his home. Known as "Uncle Bubba," he was a self-employed carpenter and a Baptist.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley with Bro. Doc Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Wier's Chapel Cemetery in Ripley.

AMORY - James Clifton Wesson Sr., 72, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory after a long illness. He was born July 11, 1936, in Lee County to Iva Kathleen Wesson. He had lived in Amory for the past 20 years. He was the former owner of several service stations in Nettleton and Columbus. He was a former employee of Day-Brite in Tupelo and a former mechanic. He was a member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church in Tupelo. He enjoyed going fishing and playing with his dog, Scooter.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Nettleton with the Rev. Larry Hill and the Rev. Jerry Grammer officiating. Burial will be in the Nettleton Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Farrar Cook Wesson of Amory; one son, Donny Wesson of Louisville, Ky.; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Annette Wages of Tupelo; one stepson, Ricky Wages (Denise) of Tupelo; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Iva Kathleen Wages, and one son, Matt Wesson.

PLANTERSVILLE - Andrew Murphy Tucker, 67, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born May 15, 1941, in Amory to Bascom Davis Tucker and Maggie Adams Tucker. He lived in Lee County most of his life and, at the time of his death, he was living in the Temple Grove community north of Nettleton. He was a retired disabled truck driver and a member of Temple Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, telling stories, watching T.V., especially the news, and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with the Rev. Truman Thompson and Bro. Jimmy Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery in Itawamba County.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Mae Chaney Tucker of Plantersville; one son, Andy Tucker (Christy) of Richmond; one daughter, Vickie Tucker of Shannon; one sister, Martha Gibson of Tupelo; six grandchildren, Tomas Tucker, Jon Paul Tucker (Amy), Sara Robbins (John), Nicholes Tucker (Kayla), Stormy Tucker and Jimmy Lamons; four great-grandchildren, Memphis Tucker, Shelby Tucker, Damion Tucker and Riley Tucker; his in-laws, Nita Chaney Jones (Don) and Jimmy Chaney (Margaret), all of Plantersville.

Thomas Ellis

VERONA - Thomas Edward Ellis, 99, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Darlington Oaks in Verona. He was born July 28, 1909, to James Thomas and Althena Sansing Ellis. He was a 1932 graduate of Mississippi State University. He taught vocational agriculture for 32 years in Fulton, Dixie Highway and Caledonia. He was state supervisor of vocational agriculture for 12 years. He was a longtime resident of Caledonia and Jackson, and a resident of Fulton for the last few years. He was a 70-year member of the Masonic Lodge and the honorary past Grand Master of Mississippi. He was an active member of the Lions Club and had earned his 25-year Service Award. He was a former member and deacon at New Salem Baptist Church in Caledonia and Woodlawn Hills Baptist Church in Jackson, and New Home Baptist Church in Fulton in later years. Over the years he acquired various honors and awards, including National Outstanding Service Award in 1960; honorary life member of Agriculture Education, 1975-1976; honorary American Farmer Degree in 1976; and Gold Star member of the Mississippi FFA Foundation. After retirement he served as a member of the State Advisory Council to Vocational Education and a consultant to the Vocational Education Division of the State Department of Education.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Home Baptist Church. Dr. Jerry Williams and the Rev. Michael Warren will officiate. Burial will be in New Home Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home of Fulton is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Hope E. Kinch of Huntsville, Ala., Sidney E. Lowrey (Jim) of Fullerton, Calif., and Nancy Poore (Robert) of Fulton; a daughter-in-law, Willow J. Grace of Cumming, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Neola Benson Ellis; nine brothers and sisters; his parents; a stepson, Billy Benson Grace; and a grandson, Steven Ellis Rogers.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

TUPELO - James A. Walton, 60, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. He was born Oct. 6, 1948, to Early Lee Walton and Azelene Shumpert Walton.

Services will be at noon Thursday at the Temple of Compassion and Deliverance in Tupelo with Bishop Clarence L. Parks officiating. Burial will be in Porter's Memorial Garden in Tupelo. Agnew and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Lee Jones Walton of Tupelo; one daughter, Ealsie (Charles) Brooks; three sons, James Oscar Walton, Ricky Lynn Walton and Thomas (Charolette) Walton, all of Tupelo; eight sisters, Linda Walton and Eugeine (Mack) Parks of Tupelo, and Brady (Isaac) Johnson, Mattie Walton, Thremorse Walton, Effie Hodges, Indiana Walton and Carrie McIntosh, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; five brothers, Johnny (Lorene) Walton of Tupelo, and Levert (Lorretta) Walton, Gillie (Nettie) Walton, Rev. Jewel Spearman

SHANNON - Jewel Spearman, 77, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. She was a native of Lee County and a longtime resident of Shannon. She was the owner of Jewel's Beauty Shop in Verona and Shannon for the last 30 years. She was a member of the Baptist church. She loved fishing, watching hummingbirds and spending special time with her family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Jim Holcomb and the Rev. Mark Cayson officiating. Burial will be in Priceville Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 56 years, Cecil Spearman of Shannon; one daughter, Rebecca McCarley (Frank) of Shannon; one son, Jackie D. Spearman (Gail) of Tupelo; seven grandchildren, Stacy Wade Spearman (Jennifer) of Mooreville, Shae Spearman of Birmingham, Ala., Sandra Tedford of Bentonville, Ark., Sherry Bentley (Chris) of Shannon, Ashley Rice (Blake) of Shannon, Shannon Woodward (Jerome) of Hattiesburg and Shelby Ritter (Michael) of Tupelo; nine great-grandchildren, Jack Thomas, Sydney, Skylar, Abbie, Rob, Blake, Drew, Madison and Conner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lunsford Estes and Vernice Millwood Estes; one son, Thomas Wade Spearman; three brothers, Thomas Edward Estes, Jap Wade Estes and Leonard Estes; and two sisters, Mildred King and her twin, Geraldine Pettigrew.

Her grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Jackie Pharr

BELMONT - Jackie "Duke" Pharr, 53, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 27, 1955, to Leonard and Dorothy Pharr. He was a heavy machinery operator and a part of the construction crew which completed the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. He was a Methodist. He was a member of the Rock Creek Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, and spending time with his great-nieces and great-nephews.

No service will be held. A private burial will be at 10 a.m. today at Belmont City Cemetery.

Survivors include his mother; three sisters, Hilda Moore, Sharon Reeves (Phillip) and Barbara Hall (Jerry); a brother, Jimmy Pharr (Debra); 10 nieces and nephews; and 19 great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Pallbearers will be Phil Storment, Gary Davis, Gerald Cleveland, Donald Cleveland, Danny O. Sheffield and Danny Pharr.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rock Creek Hunting Club, James Garner, George Belt, G.R. Davis II and Steve Henley.

Mary Elizabeth Dickerson

TUPELO - Mary Elizabeth Dickerson, 87, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. A New Albany native, she was born June 28, 1921, to Ellis J. and Jenny Black Fitzgerald. In 1938 she graduated from New Albany High School. She was married to Dr. William M. "Dub" Dickerson, who died Nov. 11, 1995. Along with her husband, she was active in the Mississippi Optometric Association. She also participated in her children's school and community functions, serving as a Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a longtime children's Sunday School teacher and nursery worker.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Tom Groome and the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Trapp (Wendell) of Corinth and Janice Woodard (Vaughn) of Tupelo; one son, Dr. Bill Dickerson Jr. (Lori) of Tupelo; eight grandchildren, Bobby Bratton (Kimela) of Tupelo, Lauren Trapp Barnett (Wesley) of Memphis, Trey Trapp of Tupelo, Alan Trapp of Oxford, Melissa Dickerson McDuffie (Jason) of Milford, Iowa, Joan Dickerson of Tupelo, Bill Dickerson III of Tupelo, and Ashley Woodard Pfahler (Josh) of Baldwyn; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine "Kaki" Boatner of Tupelo; two half brothers, Ellis Boyd Fitzgerald and Bob Fitzgerald; a host of nieces and nephews; her caregiver, Kristy Scruggs of Nettleton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Bobby Fitzgerald.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Bobby Bratton, Trey Trapp, Alan Trapp, Bill Dickerson III, Wesley Barnett and Jason McDuffie.

NASHVILLE - Reath Moore Denson, 87, formerly of Booneville, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at West Meade Place in Nashville, Tenn., after a long illness. She was a member of East Marietta Baptist Church.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at McMillan Funeral Home Chapel in Booneville with Bro. Dwayne Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in East Prentiss Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Sonja Denson of Nashville; two sons, Harold Denson (Linda) of Memphis and Jerry Denson (Amy) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one sister, Rhea Malone (Leamon) of Byhalia; three grandchildren, Dee Denson Jacobson (Johnny), Trent Denson and Ashley Chaffin; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Jordan Jacobson, Jake Jacobson and Sophie Jacobson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Sarah Maude Tipton Moore; two sisters, Jewell Chaffin and Nell Armstrong; and three brothers, Carl Moore, Jourd Moore and Ray Moore.

Pallbearers will be James Lee, Phil Malone, Rick DeBardeben, Tim Denson, C.T. Moore and Paul Jackson.

Visitation will continue until service time today at the funeral home.

Ommie Morgan

HOULKA - Ommie Jane Morgan, 87, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a member of the Hwy. 15 Bypass Church of Christ. A very loving mother, she enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with family and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robert Kingsley officiating. Burial will be in Old Cooke Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Rufus Morgan; two sons, Bobby Moorman and Sam Morgan; one daughter, Pat Winter; two sisters, Annie Jo Dearman and Elaine Jones; one brother, Ray Walls; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clelon and Nancy Walls; one son, Dexter Moorman; one daughter, Lavon Moorman; one brother, Troy Walls; and one sister, Ruby Chapman.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Walls, Ricky Walls, Tim Walls, Raymond Owen, Danny Chapman and Troy Walls Jr.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday.

FULTON - Benjamin "Ben" F. Gilmore, 74, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Lee Memorial Funeral Home.

Clara Bray

BURNSVILLE - Clara Mae Grissom Bray, 70, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Iuka. She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle. She worked in the packing department at Tishomingo Shoe Company in Iuka for several years. She loved her family and friends, and enjoyed making things and giving them to others, playing the accordian, worshipping God and fellowshipping with others.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Bro. Gary Hodum and Bro. Billy Hutson officiating. Burial will be in Grissom's Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Odis Bray of Burnsville; three brothers, J.D. Grissom (Faye) and James Earl Grissom (Shirley), both of Burnsville, and Homer Ray Grissom (Hilda) of Tupelo; two sisters, Louise Talley (J.W.) of Rienzi and Joyce Crowe (Bozo) of Tishomingo; nieces and nephews, Tim Grissom (Nancy), Teresa Vanderford, Brian Grissom (Christy), Brandon Grissom (Sherry), Travis Vanderford (Cindy), Sabrina Frost (Robert), Stephanie Talley, Tiffany Talley and Joy Medlin (Blake); brothers-in-law, Roy Vanderford of St. Joe, Fla., and Bill Bray of Melrose Park, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Louise Wood (Sherman) of Abilene, Texas, Frances Ratliff (Cleaphus) of Spring Hill, Tenn., and Lona Buchanan of Belmont; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Bray; her parents, Homer and Onie Mae Martin Grissom; a sister, Christine Vanderford; and a nephew, Ronald Grissom.

Pallbearers will be Brian Grissom, Brandon Grissom, Tim Grissom, Travis Vanderford, Van Vanderford and Robert Frost.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday.

Nell Crumpton

BLUE SPRINGS - Nellie "Nell" Roseann Keenum Crumpton, 79, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of New Harmony Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley with Bro. Doc Shelton officiating. Cremation will follow.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina Jackson of Newton and Cathy Holliday of Dumas; one daughter-in-law, Brandy Crumpton of Blue Springs; one sister, Mamie Keenum of Memphis; two brothers, Charles Keenum of Memphis and Leland Keenum of Mississippi; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Franklin Crumpton; her parents, Charlie and Mary Walker Keenum; a son, James "Jimmy" Crumpton; one sister, Ellie Keenum; and one brother, John Keenum.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
