OXFORD – Ex-trooper Christopher Gary Hughes of Tupelo faces a new trial date on a federal civil rights charge.

Senior U.S. District Judge Neal B. Biggers Jr. today set the trial to begin March 11 before him in Oxford.

Recently, Hughes' attorney, Tony Farese of Ashland, asked the court to reschedule his Jan. 14 trial date to give them time to evaluate new information about the case.

Hughes was indicted on a federal charge that, as a state trooper, he violated a woman's civil rights in the Lee County Jail.

The indictment, to which Hughes pleaded not guilty, came almost five years after the woman allegedly was stomped in the jail after her arrest by Hughes, once a top DUI-arresting trooper.
