VERONA – George Richard Thames Sr., 82, entered into rest Thursday, Jan. 10, 1013, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was born in Gulfport on May 27, 1930. At the age of 17, he entered the U.S. Army where he served in active combat during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in l955 as Sgt. 1st Class. He lived in California, Louisiana and Alabama for many years. He returned to Mississippi in l976 and retired from the Mechanical Maintenance Department of North Mississippi Medical Center in l992 after 16 years of employment.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Selma, Ala. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Reather Thames of Amory; two sons, George Richard Thames Jr. (Tracy) of Selma, Ala., and Edward Philip Thames of Centreville, Ala.; and three grandchildren, Justin, Alanna and Sam.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam W. and Pauline Thames; and his brother, Sam William Thames Jr. all of Mobile, Ala.

PONTOTOC – Christine Pipkin Patton, 87, of Pontotoc, went to be with Jesus shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. Christine was born in the Bethlehem community in Marshall County, to Onie Joe Pipkin and Easter Leona “Dinkie” Spence Pipkin. Her life was filled with love, kindness, caring and giving. She never really had a hobby, her life was about people. Chris loved the Lord and was a member of By Faith Baptist Church.
Christine's early married life was spent in the cotton fields and was assistant mail carrier of Lafayette Springs. For several years she worked in the office of Doctors Guyton, Patterson and Howard Medical Clinic and then with Vocational Rehabilitation in Oxford, Tupelo and Pontotoc.
A Celebration of Her Life in Christ will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at By Faith Baptist Church. The Rev. Billy Ray Nelson and the Rev. Marcus Coward will be officiating. Interment will be at West Heights Cemetery with Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford in charge of services.
She is survived by her brother, Joe Pipkin (Irene) of Bethlehem; her two sons, Ron Patton and Pat Patton (Janie) of Pontotoc; her five grandchildren, Melissa Lacks of Atlanta, Ga., Leslie Underwood (Eric) of Jackson, Tenn, Miles Patton of Tupelo, Trey Patton (Jennifer) of Pontotoc and Martina Moore (Jeremy) of Pontotoc; and her 10 great-grandchildren.
Christine was preceded in death by her first husband, Knox Young Patton Sr.; second husband, James L. Hooker; her son, Shirley Joe Patton; and three sisters, Jarohn MCGregor, Ezsma Thomas and Juanita Coleman.
Pallbearers will be Ray Coleman, Kenny Coleman, Johnny Coleman, Tony Coleman, Sid Coleman, Ricky Pipkin, Patrick Shaw and David Patton. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and great nephews.

AMORY – Purley Mae Thompson Smith, 88, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at her home. Born Dec. 17, 1924, she was a daughter of Vick and Rosie Rye Thompson. She attended Quincy School and married Horace Smith in 1945; he died in 2001. Before her retirement, she worked as a seamstress in the area garment plants. Her hobbies included reading, flower gardening, crocheting and knitting. She enjoyed spending time with her family and church family and was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Chuck Moffett and Bro. Ricky Harlow officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheilah Randall of Amory; one son, Jerry Smith of Amory; five grandchildren, Elaine Harris, Tommy Harlow, Ricky Harlow, Vicky Champagne and Dee Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Alisha, Carissa, Chelsea, Misty Jade, Scott, Haley and Brittni; nine great-great-grandchildren, Bray, Colton, Cayden, Alexia, Clayton, Emma Grace, Peyton Lane, Madison and Preston; two step great-great-grandchildren, Caroline and Katlyn; and one brother, Boyd Thompson of Kosciusko.

CALHOUN CITY – Christopher Todd McGonagill, 51, died Friday, Jan, 11, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. He was born June, 20, 1961, in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was self employed as a carpenter.

ECRU – Ginger Chism Fryar, 34, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. She was born May 6, 1978. She graduated from North Pontotoc High School and attended Ecru Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and wonderful daughter, and she loved her horses.

WEST POINT – Joseph Lynn Perry, 55, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. He was born Nov. 3, 1957, in West Point to Sarah Louise Morris and Olen Pliny Perry. He was a Certified Honda motorcycle technician and parts manager for Ellis Steel. He was of the Baptist faith. He loved to ride his Harley Davidson Softail Custom and work on any motorcyle or four wheeler. He married Lisa Carol Hamlin Perry Aug. 25, 1989, in West Point.

GREENWOOD – John Douglas “Doug” Crenshaw, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at his residence. He was born in Tallahatchie County, Nov. 28, 1922, to Jimmy Bull and Cumi Glenn Orrell Crenshaw and lived in Greenwood for 67 years. He married Rachel Hilda Cole on Oct. 17, 1946, in Charleston. He was a graduate of Cascilla High School and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Pacific and Guadalcanal as an anti aircraft artillery gunner in WWII. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the good conduct medal, the distinguished unit badge and the WWII victory medal. He worked part time for Liberty Cash, Piggly Wiggly and Market Place Grocery until full retirement in 2009. He enjoyed the family farm and garden in Leverett in Tallahatchie County.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williams and Lord Funeral Home with the Rev. Bernard Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton. Military Rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 29 in Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Hilda Cole Crenshaw of Greenwood; daughter, Kay (Jimmy) Crenshaw Kent of Winona; three sons, John D. (Mary Ann) Crenshaw Jr. of Roswell, Ga., William Richard (Polly) Crenshaw of Tupelo and James Edwin (Twana) Crenshaw of Tupelo; sister, Rivers Crenshaw Crouch of Olive Branch; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Metts Lord; and two brothers, Glenn Crenshaw and Dick Crenshaw.

Marie McCord Dowdy
PONTOTOC – Marie McCord Dowdy 89, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at her daughter’s residence in Pontotoc. She was born Dec. 26, 1923, to Luther Bennett McCord and Margaret Jane “Jennie” Bigham McCord of Pontotoc. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church for 66 years and was the last active charter member of the church. She was the custodian of the church for 35 years. She helped her husband with the farm, was a housewife, loved to work in her flowers and garden and loved spending time with her family. Being a Christian wife, mother and grandmother, cooking and taking care of her community and church family was among her favorite things to do.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Baptist Church with Mike Martin delivering the eulogy, Dr. Jim Carr and Jerry Caples officiating. Burial will follow in the Harmony Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda (Bennie) Martin; a grandson, Mike (Penny) Martin of Pontotoc; a sister-in-law, Virginia Dowdy of Columbus; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Maymon Dowdy; her parents, Luther Bennett McCord and Margaret Jane “Jennie” Bigham McCord; four brothers, Leo, James, Clyde and Samuel McCord; a sister, Florence McCord Anderson; a niece Wanda McCord Hall; and a granddaughter-in-law, April Caldwell Martin.
