Wayne Chrestman qualified to run for election commissioner in District 2 on June 4, 2012 but said he didn’t realize the Lee County Board of Supervisors had redrawn the county’s district lines, putting his residence in District 3.
Chrestman was elected as the District 2 election commissioner but since he now lives in District 3, he isn’t qualified to serve in District 2.
No action was taken by the board regarding Chrestman because District 2 Supervisor Bobby Smith was not present.
Lee County Administrator Sean Thompson said since Chrestman isn’t qualified to serve in District 2 the board only can declare a vacancy and appoint someone to fill the position until the next special election.
The board submitted its new district lines to the U.S. Department of Justice for approval on July 17, 2011. The DOJ returned the submission without any objections Aug. 4, 2011.
The new lines were recorded in the minutes of the supervisors’ Aug. 15, 2011 meeting.
