OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — The circus is coming to Oxford, but Jack the Kangaroo won't be wearing his boxing gloves and "play-fighting" with a clown.

Cathy Garcia, owner of Star Family Circus, and Oxford Police Chief Joey East say there won't be any boxing match of any kind.

The advertised match drew online protests and a complaint from the organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The circus is scheduled to perform Feb. 13 at the National Guard Armory in Oxford.

Garcia says the boxing match is a clown routine and not in any way cruel. She says the kangaroo will be brought out for the kids to see without a boxing ring or gloves.

East says police officers will be on hand to watch for possible violations of animal cruelty laws.
