Girl Scout troops across Northeast Mississippi will begin selling cookies today. Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Dulce de Leche, Thank You Berry Munch and Savannah Smiles will be on sale through March 17. Cookies are $3.50 per box.
“It’s only one month, so they need to get them while they can,” said Jenny Jones with Girl Scouts Heart of the South, the council that includes north Mississippi troops.
Booth sale locations include the main Girl Scouts office at the Link Centre, Lowe’s, the Walmart on North Gloster Street and other locations in Pontotoc, Amory, Aberdeen, Fulton and more.
“Some girls are choosing to do Cookie Walkabouts, where they go into their neighborhoods with a wagon or something with cookies so customers can still get their cookies,” Jones said.
Pre-order sales were sluggish, so the Scouts are hoping to see sales jump during booth sale time.
“We’re asking people to add an extra box,” Jones said. “If you normally buy two, consider buying three.”
The Girl Scouts participate in a program called Troop to Troops, where a customer can purchase a box of cookies and have the Scouts send the box to military troops overseas.
“You’re doing good for two organizations,” Jones said.
Customers can use girlscoutcookie.org or the Official Girl Scout Cookie Finder App to find where Scouts are selling cookies.
Cookie sales help Scouts build confidence, learn how to run a business, set and meet goals and manage money.
Many troops raise money to go on trips or to camp, while some choose to donate their profits.
“Some troops raise money for a local animal shelter or for a community service project. There’s one troop of Brownies whose reward is a trip to Build-A-Bear. Even though that’s not a community service project, it’s teaching girls a strong sense of goal-setting,” Jones said.
