Tammy Cooper Curry

EUPORA - Tammy Cooper Curry, 44, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in the Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Eupora with burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Webster County. Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James L. Rogers

PLANTERSVILLE - James L. "Johnny B. Good" Rogers died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Darlington Hospice House in Verona. He was born Jan. 1, 1934, to Leon and Ellie Mae Rogers. He professed his love for Christ at an early age becoming a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Tupelo, later converting to New Bethel M.B. Church in Plantersville.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel M.B. Church with Pastor Jack Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove M.B. Church Cemetery in Dorsey. N.L. Jones amp& Son Funeral Directors is in charge.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie; five sons and seven daughters, Deborah Lyles (Marcus) of Houston, James Rogers Jr. (Savannah), Terry Rogers, Leonard Rogers (Jean), all of Tupelo, Paul Rogers (Patricia) of Plantersville, Janie Cayson (Darly), Felicia Rogers (Burt), all of Tupelo, Rebecca O'Neal (Michael), Sandra Rogers (Pegues), Viki Crump (Roy), all of Tupelo, Kenneth Roger (Lashun) of Verona; 29 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a special adopted son, Robert Ward of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister-in-law, Annyce Rogers of Walton Beach, Fla.; a special friend with whom he loved to discuss the Lord, Philip Mabry; his two best trucking friends, Andrew Metcalf and Elbert Morris; and numerous loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, George; and three very special friends, Douglas Pounds, Floyd Huddleston and Ken McCarty Sr.

Visitation will be 3 until 6 p.m. today at the Eck & Georgia Shumpert Memorial Chapel at the funeral home. The body will lie in state an hour prior to service time Saturday.

BOONEVILLE - Christine Barnett McClain, 85, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, in San Gabriel, Calif. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. today at Osborne Creek Cemetery, with Sister Colette Fahrner officiating. Booneville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until noon today at the funeral home Friday.

Ruby Kay Holley

TIPLERSVILLE - Ruby Kay Bennett Holley, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Ripley. Services will be 1 p.m. today at County Line Baptist Church in Walnut with the Rev. Steve McKee and the Rev. Mike Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. McBride Funeral Home in Ripley is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will continue until service time at the church.

Levy Smith

HOLLY SPRINGS - Levy "T" Smith, 86, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at his home. Services will be noon Saturday at Christ Temple Church of God in Christ with Supt. Albert Pass officiating. Burial will follow in the Sales Family Cemetery in Moscow, Tenn. The remains will lie in repose at J.F. Brittenum amp& Son Funeral Home in Holly Springs from 2 until 8 p.m. today, and the family will receive visitors from 6 until 8 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church from 11 until 11:55 a.m. Saturday.

Calvin Townsend

WEST POINT - Calvin Townsend, 57, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Lower Prairie Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Woodland with the Rev. Danny Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Barkley

NEW ALBANY - Charles E. Barkley, 79, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital, Union County. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by United Funeral Service.

Violet Whittington

MYRTLE - Violet McDaniel Whittington, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at her residence. She was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Myrtle to Lee and Allie Prather McDaniel. She was the widow of Carol Whittington. She worked at Wal-Mart in the fabric department. She was a member of Myrtle Baptist Church, loved her children and family, enjoyed flowers and working in her yard.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Earl Farley officiating. Burial will follow in Vista Memorial Park in New Albany.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Turner (Gary) of Myrtle and Debbie Burleson (Jimmy) of Etta; two sons, Mark Whittington and Gordon Whittington (Pat), both of Myrtle; one sister, Ellie Challie of Memphis; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Inez McKinnon; and three brothers, Caudus, Coy and Cortez McDaniel.

Pallbearers will be William Browning, Michael Whittington, Scott Gregory, Keith Speck, Tracy Simmons and Randy Whiteside.

Linda J. Pickens

TUPELO - Linda J. Pickens, 64, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born Feb. 13, 1945, to the Rev. Elmer J. and Juanita Ross Bailey. Raised in Grenada, she worked for the Daily Star in Grenada for several years. She had lived in Tupelo the past 13 years. She enjoyed arts and crafts and taking care of her dogs

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Calhoun County with the Rev. Greg Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Rodney Ferrell of Tupelo; two daughters, Patricia Taylor (Curtis) of Grenada and Sharon Brown (Jeff) of Saltillo; two sisters, June Woods (Edward) of Grenada and Kathy Brooks (Dougie) of Grenada; one brother, Earl Bailey (Teresa) of Mobile, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her mother, Virginia J. Bailey of Grenada.

She was preceded in death by her father; and her daughter, Becky Brewer.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Brown, Carl Sykes, Curtis Taylor, C.W. Taylor, Steven Rhea and Dillon Sykes.

Visitation will be noon to service time Saturday at the church.

Ethelda Nail

TUPELO - Ethelda Phillips Nail, 85, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born July 1, 1924, in Rome, Miss., the daughter of Vester and Leona Benson Phillips. She grew up in Grenada County and married Kenneth Nail on Nov. 19, 1942. They had made their home in Tupelo since 1947. She was active in her community through Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Garden Club and volunteering at the North Mississippi Medical Center, and the Christian Women's Club. She lived the past six years at the Mitchell Center where she had many friends. She was a longtime member of Parkway Baptist Church.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Parkway Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Brashier officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Bozeman (Tommy) of Tupelo; two sons, Ken Nail Jr. of Jackson and John Nail (Mimi) of Tupelo; one brother, Don Phillips of Brandon; five grandchildren, Beth Bozeman Van Der Jagt (Scott) of Memphis, Amanda Nail Wilson (Jack) of Madison, Emily Nail of Philadelphia, Jay Nail of Memphis and Jenny Nail of Clearwater, Fla.; two great-grandchilden, James Van Der Jagt and Emma Kate Van Der Jagt; and longtime friend, Gwen Shumpert of Tupelo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years; her sister, Frances Friszell; her brothers, Maurice Phillips and Harry Phillips Jr..

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - J. C. Wallace, 87, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in St. Louis. Services were Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Agnew amp& Sons Funeral Home in Verona. Burial will be 10 a.m. today.

Hoover Moore

OKOLONA - Hoover Moore, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Gilmore Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 2, 1929, to Mathis Moore and Agnes Williams Moore. He was a deacon and oldest member at Chapel Grove West. He was a member of Victory Lodge Mason #417A. He was a former employee of Burris Mfc., and Action Mfc.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Grove West with the Rev. Lendell Nicholas officiation. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Williams Memorial of Okolona is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Vera Jenkins (Dr. Rev. Terwileger) of Tampa, Fla., and Ruby Johnson (Carnell) of Okolona; two sons, Hoover Moore Jr. (Erma) and Johnny Moore (Margaret), all of Okolona; a sister, Jeanette Moore of Okolona; four brothers, John Williams (Flora) and Celester Moore, all of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mathis Moore and Isaac Moore (Annie), all of Okolona; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Maudine Moore.

Visitation will be 2 until 6 p.m. today at the Chapel of Williams Memorial.

Paula M. Chandler

AMORY - Paula Michelle "Dobbs" Chandler, 42, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born Sept. 9, 1967, to Sam Finnie and Helen Jean Randolph. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, she was a member of the Rose of Sharon Church of God in Christ. She was a 1985 graduate of Amory High School. She was a great supporter of children in the community. She loved cooking, fishing and going to church.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rose of Sharon Church of God in Christ with Supt. Jessie L. Hutton officiating. Burial will follow at Burns Memorial Cemetery in Aberdeen. Darden amp& Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Jeffery Chandler of Verona; her father, Sam Finnie of Milwaukee, Wisc.; her mother, Helen Jean Randolph of Tupelo; three sons, Mario, Clennell and Christopher Dobbs, all of Amory; two daughters, Latoya and Sheketa Dobbs, both of Amory; two brothers, Carl Dobbs of Tupelo and Bobby Finnie of Amory; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2 until 6 p.m. today, with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m., at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Laura Jane Cowley

NETTLETON - Laura Jane Cowley, 78, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Gilmore Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove M.B. Church in Dorsey with Pastor Greg Pegues officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Chesteen Cowley; a son, Clinton Cowley Sr.; a stepson, Chesteen Cowley; three adopted sons, Maurice Jones, Michael Fitzpatrick and Timothy Fitzpatrick; a stepdaughter, Ida Bell Greene (Willie); sisters, Elizabeth Heard, Jimmie Ann Shumpert and Elois Pannel; eight grandchildren, Clinton Cowley Jr., Tyres Cowley, Kevin Cowley, Avery Cowley, Clinton D. Cowley, Vincent Cowley, Janice Cowley and Yolanda Cowley; and several relatives and friends.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. today and a wake from 6 until 7 p.m. at Westbrooks Funeral Home of Aberdeen. The body will lie in state from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
