RIDGELAND - Mary Jane Treadwell, 75, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was born Dec. 10, 1934, in Tupelo to George and Blanche Kellum. She graduated from Rolling Fork High School in 1952 and went on to graduate from The Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis in 1955 as a registered nurse. She worked at St. Dominic Hospital and retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi in 2002. In retirement, she worked part time at The University of Mississippi Medical Center Medical School.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. Monday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Chapel on High Street.
She is survived by two sons, Rory Treadwell and wife, Nancy, of Madison and Keith Treadwell and wife, Sue, of Brandon; one daughter, Tandi Pevey and husband, Jon, of Crystal Springs; and five grandchildren, Courtney, Jennifer, Keeton, Cameron and Mackenzie.

TUPELO - Albert Ralph Russell died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in Tupelo. He was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Lawrence County to Benjamin and Ella Wilson Russell. He graduated in 1934 from Monticello High School and in 1938 from Mississippi Teachers College (USM) with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught, coached and/or was principal at Lexie High School in Walthall County, McLain High School in Greene County and Good Hope High School in Scott County. He retired from the Mississippi Public Health Service after 32 years of service.
He served from March 1943 to January 1946 in the United States Army. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant and served as an Infantry Unit commander as a member of the Americal Division, participating in combat in the Soloman and Philippine Islands including the mopping up of Guadalcanal and the assaults of Bougainville, Cebu and Leyte. He was a member of the occupation forces of Japan. He received the following awards and honors: Bronze Star Medal with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars with Arrowhead, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Versie Lucille Brown Russell; his parents; and his 11 siblings, Ottie Russell, Roy Russell, Ola Mae Russell Bass, Benjamin Russell, Ethan Russell, Ellis Russell, Howard Russell, Oscar Russell, Bertie Russell Hemphill, Eugene Russell and Webb Russell.

IUKA - Avon Whitfield, 88, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at his home. He was a member of North Crossroads Community Church and an avid patriot. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 9th Armored Division, 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from TVA in 1983 after many years of service.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka. Bro. Bobby Christian and Bro. Earl McAnally will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Curtis Whitfield of Iuka; two sons, Joe Whitfield (Carolyn) of Baldwyn and Jack Whitfield of Iuka; one daughter, Theresa Cutshall of Iuka; one sister, Edra Kay of Iuka; three grandchildren, Trey Cutshall (Dena) of Ringo, Ga., Tiffany Lowery (Chris) of Booneville and Whitney Whitfield of Corinth; four great-grandchildren, Hogan Cutshall, Cassidy Lowery, Cooper Lowery and Chloe Cutshall.

NEW ALBANY - Wilburn Perry, 95, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital- Union County. He was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Union County to Louis and Ollie Rossell Perry. He was a retired farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a charter member of Ingomar Lions Club, and a member and deacon of Ingomar Baptist Church. He volunteered and served the community in many activities.
