Schaefer was hired to replace Sharon Fanning-Otis, who stepped down
after 17 years. He was previously an assistant at Texas A&M, which won the NCAA title in 2011.
The regular season will begin next Friday at home against Houston.
Shorter is in its first year as a Division II school.
Last year, the Lady Hawks went 28-7 and reached the NAIA national tourney.
