Logan, 86, has been living in the cottages since 1999, when she and her husband, Roy W., moved there because of his illness.
“I cook for neighbors when they’re sick and deliver food to them,” she said. “Once a week I’ll try a new recipe. I always try it out on myself first.”
Grecian spaghetti, cakes and pies are always particularly appreciated.
“I’ve always loved to cook,” she said. “I take after my mother. She was always having people in from church.”
When the Logans first married, she was proficient at most dishes – except for biscuits. She never could get them right.
“One night my husband was coming home from work and I was determined to have biscuits, so I went to the store and I bought a can, thinking he wouldn’t know the difference,” she said. “And he sat down at the table and said, ‘So, you decided to buy biscuits?’ It hurt my feelings so. But I did learn eventually how to make biscuits and my own pie crusts, too.”
Logan and her husband moved to Tupelo from Belzoni, where they lived for 28 years. She is retired from the Bank of Mississippi – now BancorpSouth – and Roy W. worked for Mississippi Gas Co. and then retired from the post office after 20 years. He died in 2005.
“I retired from the bank in 1989 because my husband had already retired and he wanted to travel and we wouldn’t be able to do that as long as I was working,” said Logan, who has one daughter, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The Logans did, indeed, travel, and took several trips, including a tour through the Rockies in Colorado, a visit to Amish/Dutch country in Pennsylvania and annual treks to Branson, Mo., to see the shows.
“After my husband passed away, I think cooking became my refuge,” Logan said. “I could get in the kitchen and cook and not think so much. We were so close. We had a lot of fun. I wouldn’t take anything for my memories.”
