According to Tishomingo County Coroner Mack Wilemon, Brooks' brother arrived to visit Brooks. When she did not answer the door, he noticed the windows were blocked with smoke and alerted Brooks' apartment manager.
Wilemon said the apartment showed evidence of a stovetop fire that may have started Thursday night around midnight. Wilemon said Brooks's body was found in a utility room near the kitchen, and it seemed that she tried to combat the fire before being overcome by smoke.
