WALTHALL — A predawn fire Thursday gutted the Webster County courthouse in Walthall, Miss.

The two-story courthouse was built in 1915. The town of Walthall is located just north of Eupora on Mississippi Highway 9.

Webster County Fire Coordinator Barry Rushing says many of the county records were salvaged in spite of the flames.

He says fire departments from Webster and several surrounding counties fought the fire, and Starkville Fire Department brought their ladder truck.

Rushing said the fire looked like in started in a southwest corner of the building and then went to the roof and burned through the roof. He says once the building got fully involved, firefighters couldn't control it.

He says firefighters had the fire out by 7 a.m., but the building is a total loss.
