CTA presents “The House at Pooh Corner,” featuring all the characters fans love, from Christopher Robin to Owl to Kanga and Roo and Winnie herself – that’s right, Winnie is a girl in this production.
Director David Maxedon took a few liberties in casting the play, and is encouraging his cast to create their own versions of these famous characters.
“I said, let’s make it our own. You can’t out-Pooh Pooh. You can’t out-Eeyore Eeyore,” he said.
In the play, Christopher Robin goes away to school, leaving behind his friends in Ashdown Forest.
“He’s excited about school, but his friends don’t understand why he wants to leave,” Maxedon said. “They learn that what’s forever is not forever, and they begin looking out for each other.”
The pals come together to build a house for Eeyore – hence, the “House at Pooh Corner.”
“At first we’re all separated,” said Meredith Nall, 15, who stars as Rabbit. “Then we all come together to build Eeyore a house. It’s very family-friendly.”
Eeyore is also a girl in this production, and she’s played by 18-year-old Mikaela Hancock. Though she’s perfecting Eeyore’s pessimistic pout, she’s also focusing on what Maxedon told his cast was the human side of all of the animal characters.
“It’s very human. There are a lot of human characteristics, with a lot of great heart-warming moments,” she said.
Iuka native Ashley Austin, 17, stars as Winnie-the-Pooh.
“It’s fun because it’s not a typical Pooh,” she said. “Pooh’s turning into me more than I’m turning into Pooh.”
