TUPELO – Parents of Lee County Schools students can start making travel plans for the 2017-18 school year.
The Lee County school board approved the district’s calendar for the upcoming school year at Tuesday’s meeting.
The calendar is similar to those in years past with students returning to school after summer break on Thursday, Aug. 3.
Teachers will report Monday, July 31 for professional development. District officials tweaked next year’s calendar slightly by removing one professional development day before school starts and placing it in October.
Teachers will use that day on October 10 to review student data. It will be one of two designated “data review” days on the calendar, the other scheduled for January 3.
The school year will officially end on Tuesday, May 22, although teachers will be required to report for a professional development day on May 23.
Graduation is slated for Saturday, May 19.
Holidays include Labor Day (Sept. 4), Columbus Day (Oct. 9), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 15), Presidents Day (Feb. 19), Good Friday (March 30) and Easter Monday (April 2).
Presidents Day and Easter Monday will also act as built-in snow days.
Students, teachers and other staff will have an entire week off for Thanksgiving from Nov. 20-24.
Christmas break will begin on Dec. 20. Teachers will return Wednesday, Jan. 3 for professional development, and classes will resume Thursday, Jan. 4.
Spring break is scheduled for March 12-16.
