ELLISVILLE – The Northeast Tigers basketball team built up a substantial halftime lead and claimed an 86-69 victory Tuesday over East Central in quarterfinal action of the MACJC State Tournament.
Northeast (18-6) moved to the intermission with a 49-31 lead, and the win propelled the Tigers into today’s semifinal round.
Shunn Buchanan (Madison Central) continued his hot play with a team best 26 points. Five Northeast players were in double figures, with Connor McKay (Baldwyn) at 13, and Kendall Stafford (Corinth) at 10.
Northeast was the North Division No. 1 seed, while East Central (14-10) was the South No. 4 seed.
Northeast will be in the 3 p.m. game today at Jones County against Southwest (17-7), which eliminated Itawamba 82-55 Tuesday.
Itawamba (11-12) only trailed 36-31 at the half in the contest. Brian Halums led the Indians with 18.
ICC was the North No. 3 seed, while Southwest is the South No. 2 seed.
Both the Northeast and Itawamba women’s teams were eliminated from the State Tournament Monday as the South won all four games.
